i. while their dynamic seems horrendous to those outside of kirigakure, haku & zabuza’s relationship was somewhat generous compared to the typical master-tool relationship traditional to the area. while zabuza did work haku to the bone & was a harsh teacher without softness, haku was not zabuza’s dog. they were free to speak up when they thought it necessary, & while zabuza might not LISTEN TO or take their advice, they were able to give it. zabuza trusted haku to carry out tasks without supervision & wasn’t worried about haku running away; that’s something that can’t be said of most "apprentice” relationships in kirigakure. however, sometimes, haku uses this freedom of speech to sneakily manipulate zabuza into doing what they want. it isn’t malicious; more often than not, haku will sneakily influence zabuza to break for camp early to avoid rain despite zabuza wanting to plunge on, or to let haku handle a mission alone when zabuza is injured. little things like that. haku’s so good at it at this point that zabuza doesn’t even notice it.
ii. haku has a strong sense of will & a personal moral code. zabuza doesn’t share that moral code, & it frustrates him half to death sometimes when haku digs their feet into the ground & refuses to budge on something because they insist on trying it their way first. haku is not a doormat. & as annouing as it is sometimes, part of zabuza respects that. all dogs like them have in this world are their teeth. he isn’t surprised to see how fiercely haku clings to something once they’ve sunk their teeth in.
iii. zabuza doesn’t season his food & haku thinks he’s a goddamn animal. listen. haku will eat anything but damn zabuza. the only difference between man & beast is the knowledge of spice racks. haku judges zabuza hard-core for it & will never let him live it down.
