Tragic backstory time! Kiritsubo ("Paulownia Court" or “Paulownia Pavilion”) is the name associated with Genji's parents - the Kiritsubo Emperor and Kiritsubo no Koi. Lady Kiritsubo was an exceedingly gentle and beautiful woman, and the Emperor's favourite. However, her low rank and lack of political support meant his deep love and constant public favour of her was considered scandalous. Harassed endlessly by other jealous ladies of the court, in particular the Kokiden Consort, she dies when Genji is three. Yamato Waki's shoujo manga adaptation (Genji Monogatari Asakiyumemishi) elaborates on their relationship, including how they might have first met.
When I hear paulownia I usually think of wood artifacts. I actually didn’t realized the tree has such gorgeous flowers! The paulownia tree has a lot of symbolism in Asian culture - it is said to be the only tree a phoenix will rest on, and only if a good ruler is in power.
