In P&P, when Lydia has run off with Wickham, they mention they are off to Scotland to elope. Later, someone (Mr. Gardiner I think?) mentions that if they stayed in London, they might still intend to marry, but just not as quickly. Is there a reason why they might marry faster in Scotland? Is the age of marriage younger or would the ministers have been all booked up in London? Or did I miss a line that explained this further?
The Marriage Act of 1753 made marriages in England/Wales a very different thing than marriages in Scotland, particularly when one party was a minor in need of parental consent before they could marry. The Act did not apply in Scotland, and so made it an ideal location for clandestine marriages and elopements, where they could get around the legal requirements for licenses and banns.
Wickham and Lydia are no doubt too poor to afford a license to marry quickly on their own, and so would have to first be resident in a London parish for a number of weeks, and then have the banns read over another three weeks, or else have the banns read in their own home-parishes (in Longbourn this would rather bring more attention to Lydia’s scandal, even if it did show her intention to be married.)
Lydia and Wickham could be married from London, they’d just have to wait several weeks for all the legal requirements to be met, and as they’re living together already that’s just Not Good for anybody’s reputation. At least if they had gone to Scotland and married quickly without the need for the reading of the banns, it would have only been a matter of perhaps a few days of them being alone together. Staying in London increases that to weeks and perhaps months, only increasing the scurrilous gossip and scandal around the affair, even if they do end up married.
Of course Darcy’s intervention can prompt Wickham to actually marry Lydia and no doubt Darcy would pay whatever fee necessary to get the wedding to take place in London as swiftly as possible before further damage can be done.
I'm doing research for a novel, and I can't seem to find much on the use of two last names in Georgian/Regency era. Any insight? I'm guessing it wouldn't have been common if it even happened at all, but I'd like to know the circumstances in which it might have. Can the kids take on both names, if say the mother has a powerful family? I'm thinking like Eliza Schuyler Hamilton, who was around the same time but over in America (but the culture was still very much influenced by England). Thanks!
I think the distinction might be between legal names and used names. Like, I informally use both my mother’s maiden name and my father’s name in some scenarios as a collective surname (not hyphenated) but legally my surname is only my father’s surname.I would think that it might be a case of when someone may have a maiden name or maternal line connection to a surname of some social distinction, in which case the name might be added in to hint at the connection. (Schuyler in this case being a prominent family in that social and political scene.)Jane Austen’s brother Edward was adopted by some wealthy childless relatives of his father, the Knights, and later took the legal name Edward Austen Knight in 1812 in order to inherit according to the will of his late adoptive mother, Catherine Knight. So as to legal names, likely changes of this nature would be made according to the wills of those setting out stipulations for inheritances or marriages. In a high-profile example more contemporary to Austen’s time, the 9th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne took on the name of his heiress wife’s family, in accordance with the agreements of the marriage contract, requiring an Act of Parliament. This was not unheard of, particularly where monied women of lower rank married into noble families, and wished to preserve something of their own name in return for their fortunes going to the titled husband. The earl was born John Lyons, later becoming John Bowes when he wed Mary Eleanor Bowes, the daughter of an MP and coal magnate, and considered the wealthiest woman in Europe, at the time. (Her life story is a hell of a thing in its own right.)Some of their children later chose to use the hyphenated form of Bowes-Lyon, including the earl’s heir, who would go on to be the ancestor of Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, better known to many as The Queen Mother to Elizabeth II.
How......how can i go moment by moment, when i cant breathe. When i feel like i can barely hold myself together. I fucking hate my life. I hate my fucking self. I cant stand myself when i get like this. I dont even want to be around myself. I just want to shut down or blow my fucking brains out. I dont fucking care any more its pointless. Its pointless to live a life when you feel like you are suffocating. Death has to be better then this fucking shit. Just please some one give me a gun and just let me blow my fucking brains out. Then maybe peoples lives would be a hell of a lot better if im not in this world. Fuck this life. Kirk out

Posts are lovely! The only thing is that post size is kinda small and the edges seem kind of empty because it's just white...maybe that's just me though. Also, not being able to see tags unless you click on the post is bothersome (although, that might also be a personal thing.)
