“I don’t know what you two are going on about..” Sakura grimaced as he looked at his two friends, Nerei and Suo, confusedly.
“You’re going on your first date, aren’t you?” Suo said with that same old polite smile of his despite trying to tease Sakura. “Yeah..! This is a big deal!” Nerei shakes Sakura by his shoulders slightly.
The three were walking to Cafe Pothos after school as usual. The previous day, you had approached Sakura to hang out together…alone… Sakura hadn’t let his friend know his plans until this moment.
“I’m not sure what you mean by ‘date’.” He says with pink tinted cheeks, knowing he was being teased by his friends. Sakura didn’t fully understand the concept of a date. He had known people went on them but he didn’t actually know the meaning or weight behind it…especially that it was a romantic gesture.
Nerei and Suo looked at him intrigued yet confused at Sakura’s response. It felt like common knowledge to them so they just assumed it was to him as well. The two exchanged a slightly worried glance before smiling awkwardly.
You had spent over an hour getting ready for your date. You were ecstatic cause Sakura actually said yes…well it was more of a, “Sure…?” but still a yes nonetheless. You were so nervous about looking your best, you even took an everything shower…!
Your periwinkle dress flowed down until just above your knees and white socks up to your shin. You did your makeup and put a cute little bow clip in the side of your hair.
The wind blew from behind, making your hair drift forward. Your legs swung back and forth off the bench in the park you told Sakura to meet you at. You had paced around for a bit before sitting down and now you were looking up at the sky.
You began to feel nervous with how late Sakura was. You could see the sun would start to set soon. The sky was beautiful but you had a hard time enjoying it when you were this nervous.
Sakura rounded the corner to the meeting spot in just a normal white T-shirt and sweatpants. He didn’t realize one would normally dress formal to a date…
One he saw you, his gaze lingered on your outfit. He wondered why you were so dressed up and looked down at his own close with squinted eyes and a confused look.
Sakura then blushed, realizing you dressed up like that all for him. He tightens his fists while he looks at the ground in embarrassment.
He thought he understood it now.
Kiriyu constantly took girls on “dates” and he’d see the girls all dressed up and pretty. He realized the romantic intentions and his face turned red as his darted up at you and back to the ground.
He couldn’t take it. His whole face felt burning hot and every fiber in his being was screaming at him to run.
Love made Sakura feel uncomfortable and he sure wasn’t ready for this…he hadn’t sorted out his feelings for you yet. He wasn’t ready to accept love from others let alone love other people back.
His body tensed as he ran away. Leaving you there alone.
You had texted him but he didn’t even read the texts. You knew he wasn’t a tech savvy person or glued to his phone. He only had the weather app for gods sake…
You wondered if you should just give up and go home. You didn’t think Sakura was a bad person…so what could’ve happened…?
You feel tears drop onto your thighs as you started crying silently. You felt stupid for ever thinking Sakura could like you and return your feelings…you felt like no one could.
You knew that it was silly to take being stood up as being unloved by all but it truly felt that way.
Your cries didn’t go unnoticed by Kiriyu across the street. He knew he saw you around before because you worked at Cafe Pothos, but even if he didn’t know you he would’ve approached you.
He squatted in front of you as he spoke softly, “Whatcha doing out here all alone?”
You lifted your head to look at him before covering your face, embarrassed. You wiped your tears and hid your face with your hair.
“Uh sorry…” you mutter, not really knowing how to respond.
“Don’t be…” he lifted your chin gently to look at your face and you finally realized it was Kiriyu.
“Oh Kiriyu…it’s you.” you said with widened eyes. You sniffled a little before continuing, “I’m fine…it’s stupid why I was crying.”
“Don’t say that. Whatever it was upset you so that doesn’t make it silly. Tell me.” He then sat on the bench next to you and offered his kind eyes.
“I got stood up…” you muttered with an embarrassed look as you fidgeted with your fingers.
His expression darkened slightly and nodded, “That’s not a silly reason to cry at all…” he said softly. It was clear he wasn’t mad at you but at the situation. Kiriyu hated seeing girls cry.
“I-…I just feel so stupid…” you hid your face in your hands again, trying not to cry.
Kiriyu pulled you into a side hug and took your hand in his. You tilted your head up to look at him to be met with his sweet smile.
He pulled you up with him, still holding hands in a gentlemanly way, “No worries…I’ll take you on a date now.”
“You don’t have to-“ He cut you off.
“I want to. Who wouldn’t want to take a cute girl like yourself on a date?” He held both of your hands and pressed his forehead against yours with soft smile.
You nodded with slight blush as you let him whisk you away.
Sakura watched from afar, realizing it was too late to apologize.
After Sakura ran away earlier, he had gone to Kotoha to ask for advice…
She sighed after Sakura explained, “Sakura…do you realize what running away probably did to the poor girl? You should’ve told her upfront that you weren’t interested.” She scolded.
“It’s not that I wasn’t interested…” he muttered with blush across his face. Her eyes widened in realization while Sakura refused to make eye contact.
“Sakura…you should go back and see if she’s still there.” Kotoha smiles now.
“What?! No no-“ Sakura stammers.
“You like her, don’t you?” She asks with a soft smile.
“I-…” Sakura leaves his mouth agape as he thinks of all the moments he’s had with you. You bandaging him up after fights…you always smiling and welcoming him no matter what and always with the same energy…you making him feel capable of love somehow. That someone can be excited to see him and wants him there. You wanting him.
He shuts his mouth before running out the door as fast as possible. He was used to running like this and the adrenaline was starting to make him feel excited to see you. He wanted to hold your hand and listen to your voice…he wanted to be with you one on one…he wanted-
He stopped in his tracks once he say Kiriyu holding your hand and wiping away your tears.
He had gotten to you first.
And there was nothing he could do now.
He ran with the same speed in the other direction without looking back.
