Daffodils are also known as setchūka, meaning flowers in the snow. It's one of three auspicious flowers. and alongside plum blossom and daphne, it is depicted in paintings that celebrate the coming of spring. Alongside plum blossom, wintersweet and camellia it is known as one of the  “Four Friends of the Snow” (Setchū no Shiyū). A one-of-a-kind hairpin - made from a beautiful vintage pattern, often seen on kimonos from the beginning of the century, thanks to which the pin gained a unique style. Murasaki (紫) is the Japanese word for purple. In Japan, for a long time, ordinary people were not allowed to wear purple clothes. You've seen it coming! The new seasonal clips,  which in two different versions, are inspired by January maiko kanzashi. One classic red, with a golden swirl in the middle and a hagoita (lucky game paddles used to drive away evil spirits) and one pink with a fluffy silk centre and sensu fans, which by unfolding shelter you from bad luck. August kanzashi sees both classic designs featuring flowers and less usual silver motifs. The traditional themes for August are pampas grass and morning glory, but you can also spot fireworks. One of the most recognizable motifs is pampas grass. This kanzashi comes in several different styles. One popular and probably best known is a burst of narrow, silver leaves topped with iridescent rhinestones. Young maiko wear them with light pink lining, which gives the kanzashi a cute and youthful appearance. The silver reflects sunlight every time the wearer moves, creating bursts of silvery light. They are incredibly delicate though: mine needed some repairs after 8+ years of showing on various exhibitions and handling so many times! This is my interpretation of a 2018 maiko kanzashi design. It includes an aster base with bamboo and ume additional motifs. My version is slightly smaller though to wear with European-style hair.  Also, the green silks are hand-dyed. It really took me a whole day to get the right shed of green!
