Kit was born into luxury, given everything they wanted as a child ... not that they experienced it long. By the time they were six, they were on the streets, stealing when they could, starving when they couldn't. Moving from town to town before they could get in serious trouble for their crimes, after a few years, they eventually made it from their landlocked town to the sea. To them, nothing could be more freeing than the open ocean, so in the dark of night, they snuck onto the first ship that caught their attention, a large ship, unknown to them, flying pirates' colors. Being small and accustomed to moving around without being seen, they were able to remain hidden on the ship until it was well past any harbor. By the time they were thrown down on the deck in front of the Captain, they knew their luck had run dry. Looking up at the Captain, they saw something they weren't expecting ... a smile. They were offered one of two choices: join the crew, never to leave, or walk the plank. The answer was obvious to Kit. So they stayed. By the time they were 17, they were first mate, taking orders from the Captain only, and by the time they were 20, they were giving the orders, not that the crew knew yet. When they turned 22, the Captain retired, letting Kit know where to find him, and leaving Kit in charge, to no one's surprise. What did surprise the crew was when Kit allowed them the choice to stay or leave the ship, which none of them did.

The name: Never knowing any name other than Kit, they took the Captain's last name. After becoming first mate, they claimed the colors of a British Navy ship they pillaged and wore them as a bandanna, confusing everyone, until the Captain called them "Union Jack" one day and the name stuck, eventually setting more fear into the hearts of Naval officers than the original Captain Jacoby.

The scars: Mostly just from various sword fights while learning how to pillage without getting wounded. The cuff covers a particularly bad scar from before Kit was on the ship and didn't think anything was going to work out. The scar on their neck is from the first Naval officer to see Kit wearing the British colors, and the only one to survive the encounter. The Captain made them let him live so that he could tell his fellow officers the tale.
