I think Oh Brother is more about Kit/Freddie than it is about Peter/Balth. I think maybe Kit started writing the song as a means of dealing with his sadness about hiding his new relationship with Freddie, and then realized a lot of it could also apply to how Balth is feeling and added a verse about Balth’s situationship.
“Oh brother” = not a literal brother, but the phrase you say in exasperation while rolling your eyes at someone
“A time when someday is too soon” = Freddie stalling on making the Fritso relationship official. There’s no time that isn’t too soon for her because she’s holding back out of fear/anxiety.
“What d’you know about loving someone” = both Kit being frustrated at Freddie holding back from him, and Balth being frustrated that Peter doesn’t seem to have the same views on love that he does
“I’m lying about new things I’ve tried” = Kit is hiding that he’s trying dating Freddie, and he literally had to hide that he tried a new sushi restaurant with her because it was a date
“I’ll make em swoon” = Kit feels confident that he can win Freddie over. I don’t see Balth having the same confidence wrt Peter though.
“How did I get so used to you by my side” = Kit and Balth both love their crushes so much and feel like they’re getting nothing back, but don’t want to lose them 😩
- “I’m the joke and he’s too cool” = the only part of the song that can’t be about Fritso and has to be about Pedrazar. Balth probably vented to Kit about feeling this way.
- “Off they parted separate ways” = someone in the comments ingeniously pointed out that this is a reference to the ending of Love’s Labour’s Lost. Kit and Balth are both expecting to eventually have to stop trying and leave Freddie and Peter behind. But the rest of this part, with the loneliness and “no way the memories fade” shows how painful that parting will be for them. (That parting is currently happening now, btw, in Sardines and beyond, when Kit and Balth go to Vegan Fred’s.)
