Inside of Kit’s room, placed where he would easily notice it, a map of Sunset City, with an arrow pointing to a bridge spanning over a river, with the message scrawled after reading “Good place to catch the sunset?” Followed by a quick drawing of the head of an E-121 Phi.
"What the—"
Kit quickly checked around him. Window locked, apartment door closed, at least since Surge stepped out to do... whatever it was she was doing. Hopefully it wasn't visiting him. Regardless, he had a good idea of who left this map, and that person definitely had the knowhow to break in and leave it. That just left the question of "why?" The fennec had thought he'd all but severed ties with that Penumbra character. Could just be professional courtesy, but again that didn't give him answers. He skimmed the note, again and again, searching for some indication of an ulterior motive. Nothing.
With Kit's plans on hold in lieu of recent events, he had no need of the copy-bot's software. Surge's animosity had already been reignited by the possibly of Starline's survival, and a recent run-in with an out-of-place octopus had led to a situation that had been actually rather good for the terrible twosome's relationship. So for what reason would he even what a Phi unit's noggin?
It didn't take long to come up with a new excuse. If Starline was indeed still active, taking any advantage would be a necessity. Kit took the map, grabbed his pack off the kitchenette sink and ran out the door.
From the (presumably real) door, comes a light, airy ratataptap. Someone appears to be knocking? The hedgehog opens the (presumably real) door to find below him a droopy looking bundle of deep aqua fur in yellow boots holding a sheet of equally droopy paper. Well, if it isn't Kitsunami, of course! His piercing magenta eyes stare up at the hedgehog.
"I have a message for you. From Surge," the little fennec states, plainly, diverting his gaze to the page in his paws. Straightening out the leaflet, he takes but a single breath, and reads aloud.
"Die."
"Kit? How'd you know I was-" Sonic is interrupted by the fennec.
"Okay, what's the message?"
"'Die.'"
Of course it is... "Yup, she would send a message like that."
I asked Surge this but she said to ask you... are you friendly? If I attempt to pat your head because your adorable, would you bite?
"Surge has exclusive rights to doing any sort of ruffling of fur, head-patting, or other forms of physical affection. Plus, I'd really rather you didn't, and if you try, I will trap you in a bubble of water. With an air pocket. I'm not a monster.*"
The tenrec would sneak up behind him, ruffling his head a bit. “Oi, drippy, whatcha been up to?” Surge asked, a fanged grin across her face.

"Ah ma'a—uh, Surge!"
For the second time in as many weeks, Surge caught Kit off guard. In a flurry of surprise and overcorrection, the fox accidentally deleted the file "EvilPlans.txt" that was sitting open on the screen in front of him. He was left staring at it in disbelief.
"Well, I was plotting out our patrol routes for the next month, but not anymore, I guess," He grumped. He looked back up at his best friend the electric tenrec. "What about you? How'd your trip to Eggman's base go?"
"Get back to Surge! Support Surge! Be with Surge!"

"What the? Who the heck got into my account and left this message here? Oh... I told Surge this was a bad idea... If it was that Liar who did it... I'll drown him for sure when I get the chance."
Kit heads home after an all-nighter working on a secret project for Surge.
He awakens with a sneeze. Wrapped in unfamiliar sheets, in an unfamiliar bed, in an unfamiliar room. Sniffling, he tries to recall how he ended up here.
The Map. The Message. The Meeting. The Machine.
He blinks, blurry eyes focusing as sleepiness fades and realization takes its place. He shot upright.
The Phi unit.
Had he really let himself get that wrapped up in working on that thing? And with a complete stranger, no less? This was unlike him. And speaking of that stranger...
Kit slid out of bed as slowly and quietly as he could, doublechecking the straps on his pack as he tiptoed up to the door. The not-hedgehog had neglected to disarm the fennec before placing him in confinement. Kit reached for the doorknob to give it a test jiggle, only to find an empty slot where the lock should be. Hm.
Instead, he brought an eye up to the hole to peek into the adjacent room. Light shined down from a caved-in portion of the ceiling in the far corner, indicating that sun-up had been not too long ago. It illuminated the workspace nicely. He could see the Gizoid replica, obscured under a loose sheet. The workbench itself had been tidied up, all tools packed away, not a single one out of place.
No sign of his benefactor though. Could he have gone out? Perhaps. Kit's stomach growled. Likely gone to get breakfast, though the fennec wasn't sure if the guy even needed to eat, given his claims of nigh-immortality. Probably getting not getting it for himself, then. If his acquaintance had been the one to put him to bed, who's to say he isn't also...?
Perish the thought.
Kit was well acquainted with finding food for Surge and himself. He didn't need someone to baby him. He finally pushed open the door, taking a cautious step out whilst scanning the room for any signs of the other person. Nothing. Not even a speck of dust disturbed or an out-of-place quill.
If there was any chance Kit could leave unnoticed, it would be now. He scampered over to the front door, wrenched it open, and exited into the early morning sunshine of Sunset City's neglected warehouse district. Judging by the sun's position in the sky, it couldn't more than half-past eight. Too early for most stores to be open, and his best chance to run home before the not-hedgehog formerly known as "Gadget" returned, or worse: Surge waking up to find Kit wasn't there. Kit couldn't stand the thought of how upset she might be with him for ditching her without a single word.
He hurried down the street to the nearest bus station. Just as empty and forlorn as the rest of district, but he'd at least be able to buy a ticket back to Westopolis from the automated kiosks still running. Upon arrival, he finally pulled out his phone. No messages. A sigh of relieve. She didn't know he was gone yet. As soon as the next bus arrived, he was on his way.
One ticket, and an overpriced snack well past its sell by date later, and he was home.
Home. Never had one of those before.
When would you have ever had one? Is Surge not enough for you?
He shook the thought away, as he stood before the door to their shared apartment. took a breath. Unlocked the door. And stepped through to find the tenrec fast asleep in her bunk, turned away from him. All he could see of her was a tangle of loose green quills and bright yellow sweatpants. For once, she seemed to be sleeping soundly, not a single snore to be heard. He allowed himself a soft smile as he mounted his hydro pack upon a chair and snuggled himself into his pillow fort. It wouldn't be long until she woke up, but he wanted to be right where she would expect him to be when she did.
He had to. Surge was important. It was his duty to be important to Surge. After all, what he be without her to support?
