a familiar black hedgehog is on an investigation in an old base of eggman’s. The mission was going fine until he heard a sound coming from behind him, quickly turning around to see who it was. “Who’s there? Show yourself now.”
@hedgehogheroes3
The small pile of badnik scrap slipped out of the fennec grasp, clattering loudly to the floor.
"Ah, heck," He muttered to himself
Little did he know that there was another person just around the corner when he stepped out to clean up his mess.
"Ah. Uh. Hello~o?"
nest inspection 6, and if you're feeling generous, 12 as well! it's one of my favorite birdfics out there!
Oh thank you Soh! This is the post it's referencing and the fic in reference is here.
6. What makes this fic special or different from all your other fics?
Nest Inspection is to this day one of my favorite works. I just think it came together really well. It's concise and fun, and I get to play this reveal game, especially since it's set in a very specific version of post-canon that only I know the full extent of. It was the first time I did an outsider perspective and my god it was fun. Because of that it just stands out. The character voices were incredibly clear to me, I could really feel the setting, and I was just having fun painting this 'abnormal' environment and frazzled perspective. Fun fact, for Christmas my good friend who happens to be a wonderful thespian actually read the entirety of Nest Inspection in an audio-book format. He literally knows nothing of birdmen but it was actually perfect. He knew it was one of my favorite works cause I always talk about it. I need to run it by him, but if there's interest I might be able to share it? 12. What do you like least about this fic?
Probably the fact that it's from an AU series I never got to really dig deep enough into. The Nestmates AU was very much my projection of personal adulting woes. Like renting a house/apartment, getting a 'real' job, and trying to appear like you got it together. Portraying the Birdclub in that light really emphasized that ostracizing feel and my previous Heart Song and Summer Haze imply that reality. The comfort of your crew going at it with you was just so warm to me. Essentially, there's plenty more where this idea came from and I hate that I could totally write more.
Also, the couch is ripped up because they definitely have fun together with the talons out and I could have been more embarrassingly clear about that but I'm an ace nerd uncomfortable with digging much deeper than the implication but it's there man.
I’m gonna go through my inbox and clear out some headcanon requests, so if you’d like me to do a little headcanon of you and the boys, don’t be afraid to ask! Or just come talk and hang out!
Eishi is just so gay and relatable I love him so much?? He's a character I can connect with in so many ways I'd like to kiss Tanabe for creating him
You and me both. Birdmen’s appeal goes beyond the cool concept and interesting themes. Like, don’t get me wrong, I love love love wings and flying and boundary pushing science experimentation and the designs for those birdsuits and the concepts behind the individual abilities and how that plays into a larger drama...But these characters. They are vibrant and nuanced and relatable. I’ve commented in the dissimulation many times that they are endearing children and they act like it. So by and large, they carry the manga home... And EISHI is a down right reigning triumph. He is relatable and hilariously easy to exasperate, a straightman act (ha) to all the comedy and painfully sweet when he doesn’t even mean to be. But then you add his grey areas, the struggle with his leadership and finding his place in the world. His mistakes and stubborn misconceptions, the earnest desires that sneak up on him and carry him away. God, he feels so real.
I have genuine affection for him, more than any other character in fiction because of the artful skill used in putting him together. Tanabe is a wonderful storyteller and has a knack for innovative plots, but it feels like she’s really refined her character process even more than her previous works in the precise composition of Eishi Karasuma.
Wyvern, Rylak, Hippogryph, and Mud Jumper Toad
Wyvern - Is there someone in your character’s life they feel indebted to? How does your character prefer to “return a favor”?
“Yes. And no. I’ll always feel somewhat indebted to Lady Starsong. There may be nothing I could do to return the favor. I tried. i worked for and with her for over two decades. My feeling of owing her wasn’t enough to keep me there after what happened. And it’s funny, if I think about it too long. Other people have done more for me since then and never quite have I felt the same way about it.”
“But then, i suppose distance has a way of making how huge it all was fade.”
Rylak - Does your character have a preferred mount they use? If so, what?
“If I need someone to fly me somewhere, Sunsoul will do it. he’s a phoenix, a fire bird, a bird shaped fire elemental. That should be enough - if not, I’m working on his fire conjuring I can ride.”
Hippogryph - Has your character taken someone under their wing? An apprentice? Adoption?
“We - my husbands and I - adopted Tam. He’s not an apprentice, he hasn’t chosen any one particular area of interest yet as he shouldn’t. Outside of him - I enjoy teaching the children at the Faire. They’re all brats and I will be the first to clap when they end up burning down one of the tents.”
“…Teaching the children from the rookery a bit while they were stuck in my office was… nice. After I read to them and got them calmed down. Not something - I probably shouldn’t do it regularly, learning from dragon elders is better for them. But they were good kids.”
Mud Jumper Toad - Your character gets to make three wishes. What would they be?
“I hate wishes. No one should ever wish for things from some stupid magical items. I hunt down magical items all the time. There is always a twist. Still. ASSUMING that I had somehow gone insane, and ASSUMING the wishes actually did what I want them to - “
“I’d wish that Ash’s lifespan could match mine and Lyn’s.”
“I’d uh, wish Sunsoul could meet his actual parents. There’s a lot he seems to know instinctually… and a lot he doesn’t. Pretty sure they’re dead, since I think I know who one was but - Bird parents. Go for it.”
“…Fuck. Never tell Lyn this. It doesn’t matter, I swear it doesn’t but I want to know. I’d wish I could know if he ever would have developed feelings for me without the bond or if it conned him in to it.”
"Did she show up yet?"
The fox landed not far from the other, hopping out of the tornado and making his way over.
The bags forming under the Fennec's hidden eyes said enough. He'd been pacing since he arrived at Westopolis airfield, a single suspended strand of fluid arcing out from his hydro-pack to scrape away the minutes passing by into the dirt and grass alongside the runway. Only five tallies so far, but it did nothing to assuage his worries.
"No. She hasn't. I'm... I'm worried for her," If his ears could droop any lower, they would. "This wasn't the plan."
Once the fennec came back to the land of the living when he woke up, he was greeted with the surprise of being in Sunset City, with Whisper sitting across from him. Guess she carried him here.
“I trust you rested well?”
{@quietwhispering}
A long, dreamless sleep, interrupted by the peeking of sunlight against shuttered eyes. Reluctantly, those eyes creaked open. The restful fennec could only barely make out a shock of blond bursting from the grey blob sitting against an equally drab backdrop. It took a moment for him to realize that the blob was none other than Whisper the Wolf. For the second time, Kit had awoken to unfamiliar walls in a stranger's mildly uncomfortable bed.
Blurry eyed and feeling somewhat chilly without his usual pillowfort, Kitsunami slowly drug himself up to match the older wolf's posture. He nodded in the affirmative, grumbling as he tried to remember what he'd been doing before he'd collapsed last night. Something do with a search for something...?
"Wha... Wha happen... I..."
