Absolutely real
Mikey would 100% growl when he smells/hears/senses a newcomer and he would get into fight stance and guard his bros (despite them explaining that they invited the person over) until he sees who it is and then he'll go into "baby kitten" mode and cuddle up with them and beg for head pats etc.
Sometimes I go into kitten mode when I want attention and my dom is busy. Don't care what she's doing. I'll just start rubbing against her and climb on her until she pets me.
