He should have known that during that time of the day the cafe would be filled to the brim with people. Usually he got here when the crowd had gone home already and he could enjoy a quiet cup of coffee close to the window.

Today, his favorite spot at the window was taken. But it was just one single woman sitting there, which left enough space at the table for him to join.

He stepped over to the pretty lady, throwing his most charming rockstar smile at her.

Excuse me. Would you mind if I sit down with you? You see, all the other seats are taken, unfortunately.

Knowing Phoenix, anything was possible. Just one look at the guilt all over his boyish face and she was filled with concern for him, not so much her files.

“I promise I won’t get angry if you tell me what happened, Phoenix. Did you happen to misplace something while you were tidying up?”

Phoenix’s lips wobbled, “Uhh... Kinda worse than misplaced...”

He removed his hands from behind his back where he’d been clasping them and showed Mia the small, cracked picture frame. The photo inside seemed undamaged, thankfully. It still clearly depicted a slightly younger Mia smiling beside an unfamiliar man with dark, wild hair and striking brown eyes. 

“I’m sorry,” Phoenix whimpered, “I-I knocked it down by accident– I tried to catch it but I just fumbled and it hit the corner of the desk and...”

He trailed off, lamely, “I-I promise I’ll replace it...”

At only six years old, Robin Newman still did not have the best sense of direction. So when looking for her parents, she realized that she was not in the part of the courtroom she thought she was.

Thankfully, Robin saw an adult woman standing near by, and approached her. The woman had a pretty scarf on. “Excuse me, pretty lady?”

“Um, Ms. Fey? I have something I wanted to ask you about... I’m aware that your family is very atuned with the supernatural and... well...” Miles was struggling to find the right words.

“What is one supposed to do if they believe a spirit is following them?” He felt silly for asking something like this. But who else could he turn to? Maybe it wasn’t really a spirit he kept seeing and he was just having hallucinations?

He hardly had to think about the smile on his own face in return, eager to please.“ No ma’am! I finished everything. I was hoping I could get a bit of insight on this case. I know it’s -” “ Me, Miss Fey?” Often, he wasn’t so disposed to being bashful, but this was a change in circumstances.  He reported to Mr. Wright  a good portion of the time, he was happy to be under only one pair of scrutinizing eyes- though a second pair was rare in the workplace, so he’d been told at that college job fair, ethics being a fair part of that little event.

“Of course-” And immediately to taking out a clipboard from  Wright’s desk and paper, pen, standing attentively at her side. “ From what I’ve been told, Mr. Jack Williams started investing in real estate six months ago. I believe we’re dealing with wiring fraud?”

Though they hadn’t met often, Miles always made an effort to keep tabs on the opposition. Even though Grossberg's understudy posed no threat to him, it never hurt to be prepared for the future when they would inevitably be pitted against one another. Every thought and observation was hidden behind his paper-thin veneer of practiced politeness, but he was sure even someone like Mia would be able to uncover his distaste for her and her work.

Klavier’s face brightened when he saw that Mia Fey did indeed answer his text. He was already on his way to the cafe, simply jeopardizing if she would come or not. Not that he minded having a drink all by himself... it’s just that he didn’t bring any work, so it would be quite boring being there all by himself.

[Text to Mia Fey:] Great! I’m looking forward to see you!

He put his phone away again and entered the cafe, asking the waiter immediately after the table where he and Mia were sitting the last time together. He remembered her mentioning that she came to the cafe more regular and if she was anything like Klavier she would prefer her usual table just the way he did.

He picked up the menu while waiting for her, but signalized that he still wanted to wait with his order for his guest to arrive.

“ I guess I’ve been caught up in just...  coming to expect this kind of thing, Miss Fey. I was... actually being sarcastic.”

Though now that she’d taken him genuinely, it makes him bite the inside of his cheek while they walked down the street of this barren countryside, a smattering of houses every few miles, and yet they were still to come to the main thoroughfare where they were supposed to be greeted by their newest client, one Mr. Coar, a reporter who was being sued for his stories. “Corruption is worse in small towns.  We learned about that first-hand when I was still in college... and  I don’t know how many times I’ve heard Mr. Wright called corrupt when he was disbarred. I’m just sick of it at this point.”
