Born on this day: kitten-ish French actress Simone Simon (née Simone Thérèse Fernande Simon, 23 April 1910 – 22 February 2005). She’s a haunting, luminous presence in French films like La Bête Humaine (1938) opposite Jean Gabin. Simone’s Hollywood sojourn was mostly unsuccessful (partly down to her own volatile temperament: her friend Marlene Dietrich unhelpfully advised her "a star is only as important as she makes herself out to be”), but it did lead to her starring in two eternal classic eerie golden age horror masterpieces: Cat People (1942) and The Curse of the Cat People (1944). Pictured: portrait of Simon by George Hurrell, 1937.
