That scene in Kiki's Delivery Service where Jiji the kitty excitedly points a cup with a black cat design and says "It's me, it's me!" and Kiki then quietly buys the cup feels like something that would play out between Chase and kitty Omi

Omi is so painfully touch starved.

He's standing firm in his convictions in the small ways he feels he can, he's horrified at the state of the world.

But he still can't help but visibly falter at being shown the sort of affection he's never really known before from any other mentor.

And the way Chase just sat back, smirked, and waited for Omi to come back for more ear scratches.

It really shows Chase's “let him come to me himself” attitude. Chase knows Omi so well. Better than Omi knows himself, with how surprised Omi was at how happy the affection made him.
