Mattholomule just wanted to prove himself to the rest of his Tribe and earn their respect, but with this chance encounter he gained so much more than that…
Gustholomule ATLA crossover, Gus is the Avatar. Updates dependant on the whims of motivation. There will at least be some non-chronological drabbles and a bullet fic/headcanons post incoming.
Once again, happy birthday @hipster-rapunzel my little batata!
A Leaf in the Wind
Ladies and gentlemen! I'm coming to you live from Republic City's Pro-bending Arena, where tonight the best in the world continue their quest for a spot in the finals. Grab your snacks and grab your kids because this next match is gonna be a doozy!
──────✧──────
Airbenders have been integrated into probending, but are often considered to be the weakest team member. Jinora, who has mastered many techniques and done pro-bending sparring with Korra, seeks to prove the world wrong. Her upstart team, the Wulong Forest Winged Lemurs, have shaken the pro-bending world as both a new team and one with an extremely strong airbender. If they can just win this match against crowd favorite, the Zaofu Shirshus, they’ll be in the finals! However, all of Jinora’s teammates have been knocked out, and she’s the last one standing…
In Defiance of Gravity
When the Fire Nation attacked, the Air Nomads were very nearly decimated. The genocide shattered centuries of Air Nomad culture, and even more has been lost in the battles since then. Airbenders may not anger easily, but neither can you keep us down.
It has taken a full century, two Avatars, and a Harmonic Convergence, but the Air Nation is on the rise! There are new airbenders and herds of Flying Bison again; scholars and archaeologists are respectfully exploring the Air Temples; and Air Acolytes are renewing the practices of daily Temple life. The New Air Nation has come such a very, very long way...
All the hugs to @hipster-rapunzel and Gner0 for beta, and for handholding me through Kainora Week!

Kai accompanied Jinora and her family to the beach, little did he know...
A short ficlet adding Kai to/expanding on the Avatar TLOK comic "Beach Wars" from Free Comic Book Day 2022.
Inspired by/written for the Kainora server's challenge to add Kai to the comic (as he deserves!)
With special thanks to @hipster-rapunzel, both my beta and constant companion in chaos <3

Kai is used to being invisible. Get in, get out, leave town before they start to remember your face. While most people find attention flattering, for Kai, it can be dangerous. And this time, he seems to have attracted the wrong kind of attention! A young airbender looking to prove herself is hot on his tail. Following him through each town, matching him step for step… he could get used to this dance.

Act I: I Bloom In Vivid Colors
Everything changed after the Harmonic Convergence.
The modern world and the Spirit World began to blend together, regardless of how either of their denizens felt about it. Spirit World plants sprouted and spirits roamed the material plane as they wished. Korra set us on a road to healing and coexistence before embarking on her trip to the Spirit World, society taking slow, curious steps towards living with their new neighbors. There will always be naysayers, or those who take longer to adjust, but despite that, humanity was making great strides! That was, until people started getting sick.
About a year after Korra left, those colorful, exotic spirit flowers that people had begun to enjoy - they started showing up where they shouldn’t be. The first case was in a middle class family in Republic City. A young artist suddenly coughed up a lightly glowing flower while at a cafe.
At first, people thought it was a publicity stunt, performance art. Even for the next handful of cases in the city and a couple across the other Nations, there wasn’t much news coverage. Sure, there were some rumors, or people laughing at this strange new fad among the youth…
Panic hit the world all at once, like an Earthbender’s wall slam.
At first they thought it was contagious. Some fled from Republic City and any region that had grown a local Spirit Forest, others shunned those who had welcomed the change, and there was a wave of violence against spirits. The government and Air Nation Peace Corps did their best to quell the tide, but the outlash was sudden and intense. Even once it was proven not to be contagious, nor to be spread directly from Spirit World flora or fauna, many maintained their suspicions and negative perceptions. In one fell swoop, Spirit Bloom Syndrome had undone a year of work, and even gone further to instill new prejudices.
Ever-capable, President Zhu Li Moon had assembled a team of expert physicians, leading Spirit World researchers and those with a strong understanding of spirits early in the outbreak. Korra was called back numerous times to consult. The first discovery was that the spirit blooms would actually take root in the patient’s lungs. A small seed would just appear one day - not airborne or inhaled, it would simply apparate - and then grow, and grow, and keep growing. By the time one was spitting up petals or coughing out leaves, they usually only had a month or two left. The few attempts at operating were… disastrous. The plants reacted to being excised, much like a Spirit Wild under attack. Each case would grow at a different rate, so the time it took to deteriorate varies, but without a cure, the only result was death.
Seven months into the panic, it came to light that the true cause of this mysterious disease… was love. Or more accurately, yearning for love and believing that it was unrequited. After all that. All the pain, fear, and panic. It was actually coming from inside our own minds.
The following years have seen great strides in mental health resources, support groups and a great importance has been placed on communication (although sometimes a stray petal will give you a very unwanted push).
Society has learned to cope with all kinds of cases. A long-time couple, believing they had drifted apart, teens too shy to approach each other, falling in love with a stranger or losing contact - often curable with the correct resources. On the other hand, emotions are fickle, and not every scenario is “solvable”. Sometimes feelings aren’t requited, sometimes the other party can’t be found, and sometimes, even in the face of death, people are just too stubborn.
It was in these times, 8 years after the Harmonic Convergence, that Jinora met him and everything changed, again.
