2021 : Tropicana Jewellery Chest with Bespoke Marquetry design on Tambour doors This is probably my proudest piece I have made thus far. It is also the last commission I took before embarking on the next phase of my life. I have always wanted to make a tambour door piece of furniture but I needed it to be different and not-so-ordinary. By combining marquetry on the tambour door I have successfully done what I felt was the most difficult and complex piece I have ever made. It was technically challenging and I was also working on a very strict timeline. I was in the midst of packing up my studio for my move and did not have the luxury of time to do many tests and prototypes. Made with various dyed veneers on Mahogany base veneer, the front marquetry consists of tropical flora (from left to right) : Begonia, Monstera, Maranta, Pink Torch Ginger, Dracaena and Frangipani. Tambour door backing is a linen laminated Liberty Fabric ‘Tana Lawn Tou-can Hide’. Structure made mainly with Rengas also known as ‘Borneo Rosewood’. Dovetailed joinery on carcass. 4 traditional dovetail drawers with maple sides. Carved drawer pulls are laminated with various dyed veneers. Tall drawer with brass middle rods. I must also mention that part of this piece was made with client-in-studio; preparing the carcass material and helping with the joinery on the drawers and sides. Each drawer contains a customised box to house special items for each of their 3 daughters.
