All parts ready for assembly. The overlaid dyed Tyvek® is laminated on a substrate before piecing it together with cherry sides and cherry veneered bottoms. I have also incorporated a walnut lipping to form sort of a  beading when the lid goes into place.

This is my first attempt at hand dyeing Tyvek®. I have used various colours depicting water bodies like lakes and oceans. By cutting Anigre veneers in shapes of water flows to form an overlay; the combination of both will become a series of box lids.

‘Infinity’

Inspired by the infinity symbol (∞) ; a line that never ends. 

For a couple who recently tied the knot amidst the pandemic. 

Made with red cedar and marbled anigre veneer bottoms. Wenge lids with dyed goat leather lid tabs. Using a mixture of half lapped joints, dovetails and secret mitred finger joints. 

A small technical feat for me, (and for those in the know) in terms of calculation and trying my very best to get everything squared.

‘Trout’

Trout parchment lid, cherry wood with walnut inlay and walnut base feet. A walnut fish hook rests in a recessed chamber that ‘locks’ the box. Finished in hard wax oil and wax.

@dddots has been experimenting with skins; mainly fish and frogs. The natural patterns on the skins are interestingly random and unique. There are many techniques and methods to treat the skins.

This beautiful trout skin has been stretched and dried into parchment, and now sits wonderfully as the lid of this box.

A 5th Anniversary Jewellery Box

Ash Box, with Oak, Oak Burl and Mother of Pearl inlay. 

Inspired with Art Deco elements, this jewellery box features a central ring tray and 2 upper trays. The lower compartment houses a tray box with a deeper area for taller items. Under the lid showcases the couple’s wedding date inlayed in Roman numerals. Installed with polished brass smarthinge.

I thoroughly enjoyed the process of designing this box and making it. I spent a long time on polishing this box with a method I had learnt in Paris called ‘vernis au tampon rapide’, or a variation of ‘French Polishing’ I had learnt previously. This is a tedious process of applying multiple layers of shellac polish and buffing it gently after each application.

A Humidor made together with my client who very enthusiastically came and was part of the making process. There was much discussion between us regarding the design, the functionality, and the reasons why certain materials and hardware were used. Not the easiest piece to make, but as with every piece I undertake, I learnt something new; this time about cigars and humidors in the process. 

Solid Cherry humidor, internally lined with Spanish Cedar veneer. Book-matched Birch Burl top with walnut inlay. Solid Spanish Cedar trays with walnut and brass accents. Kumiko-inspired humidifier compartment with a lid attached with a hygrometer, thermometer and brass finial. Completed with smart hinges by Andrew Crawford as always.

Probably the smallest commission box to date. A proposal ring box made with Walnut with brass hinge. White cold porcelain roses made by @dddots​ . We spent a long time on the design and loved the entire process of this build. This box went for a surprise proposal all the way in Florence, Italy on a carousel! This commissioned box was made as a gift from my client to his fiancé. 

The lid is made from book-matched walnut burr veneer. 

The presentation tray contains a marquetry design of an elephant made with oak and various dyed veneers. A design of lily made from hand-dyed, hand-cut leather by Adelene. 

Beneath the presentation tray is a concealed space for letters and penned well wishes from their close friends. 

A separate tray made from walnut and rosewood was made to be an additional insert when the decorative presentation tray is taken out as a display piece. 

Fitted with polished brass hinges and finished with traditional french polish, buffed to high shine, and a protective layer of renaissance wax.
