hii, i love your blog header :) by any chance have you had the delight of reading the original karate kid iii script? there’s a LOT of great dutch content in there and i’m surprised no one talks about him as much!

Its an absolute and problematic trainwreck however THE JOHNNY CONTENT? THE DUTCH CONTENT??? my friend you're making me itch to read it again haha, because my memory never serves me very well.

It does make me wish Dutch could've really been in the film the way it ended up, maybe someone aligned with Mike before sense about Kreese is knocked into him...sigh every day I mourn the fact "Cobra Kai never dies" in kkiii only included Kreese and Silver, and not Dutch (and Johnny 😏)

Why do I see most of Terry’s actions as self-harm?

He had a nice life, Kreese comes and everything explodes in his face, every little thing he worked with for himself and there he is back in time, something he considered/was told that was ‘insane’ becomes his reality again, it becomes something that makes him feel alive. His manic smirk during fights that yes he will inflict violence on someone, but also he’s going to get hurt...

An intelligent man who disregards the option of everything going wrong, or doesn’t care if everything goes wrong and what the consequences to his life would be.

War trauma, major depressive disorder and aggresion... towards others and towards himself. 

Everything about him revolves around himself, but has he learnt to love himself?

Everytime I watch KKIII (which is rarely because as a movie it sucks) I can't help but think about how fundamental it is to understand Daniel as a character and to understand why when he meets Johnny at the beginning of CK he is all golden locks, car fixed for free and big smiles but when he hears about Cobra Kai he sees red and loose his mind. Johnny was never Daniel's problem after KK, Kreese and CK and what happened in KKIII were. There are so many years of repressed trauma associated with that name that I just want to hug my messy kid and pay for his therapy.

Little rich boy

Not many knew it but Terry grew up in a filthy New York neighborhood after being born with a silver spoon in his mouth. His Mother left his Father when he was eight. Too much alcohol, too many women, too many fights, too many slaps.

No more swimming pools, horses, expensive toys. 

Just a small boy who knew too much.

Mom died when he was seventeen. He spent the money he had for her funeral. He never thought to look for his dad and he enlisted, angry his mother left him all alone. 

His Father found him after the War.

To contunue this drabble’s thoughts,

Twig’s accent is not one of a young man who was schooled in a fancy educational institute, or grew up among other rich kids in a boarding school. His speech very slightly changes in the 1972 flashback and more of when we see Terry in Karate Kid. And nowadays, in Cobra Kai, Terry is a well eloquent rich gentleman that slips only when he’s with Kreese.

So I think of two options: 1. what it’s written in the drabble

and 2. he’s pretending when he’s among people less privileged than him. 

I’m a sucker for dramatic past and the fact he can navigate through seedier parts of the city to hire thugs for his dirty work does fit with the headcanon of growing up -protected by his mom, but bullied nontheless- in such a part of the city with the added bonus he’s their Boss..

But the idea he pretends to be one of the guys to be accepted is also sad and plausible.
