Absolutely stunning goal from Barry but what a comeback from Klasnic!
This game is going to get much more intense.
Club By Club Analysis - Bolton Wanderers
Last Season:
Position: 14th
Top Scorer: Ivan Klasnic/Matt Taylor (8)
FA Cup: 5th Round
League Cup: 4th Round
This Season:
More of the same for Bolton again this year. The Allardyce era of European finishes is long over but Owen Coyle's side remain a stable midtable outfit. Relegation is unlikely and under Coyle's stewardship the Trotters can improve on their disappointing finishes under Gary Megson and build a side that might soon challenge for Europa League football again.
Predition:
The Whites will be hoping to improve on their 14th position finish last year and with a sense of resurgence around the club I feel the climb will begin this year with Bolton jumping a few spots up to about 10th.
Srengths:
The Boss - Owen Coyle showed at Burnley that he has tactical awareness and is a great motivator. Bolton are in safe hands.
Jussi Jaaskalainen has kept goal reliably for Bolton for years now and is still regarded as one of the top keepers in the league, whilst he is prone to the odd error, the experienced Finn remains an important player for Wanderers
Wingers- Lee, Taylor and Petrov are capable wingers who can put in consistently top class crosses and all three possess the ability to beat their markers with ease. The three also have a real eye for goal and should regularly chip in with important goals.
A long throw - Last season saw Bolton steal Stoke's trademark move, scoring 6 goals directly from Rory Delap-esque long throws.
Weaknesses:
Leaking goals - Strangely Bolton finished with more goals conceded than the hapless Portsmouth team last season and will need to become less generous at the back and start closing games out.
The new signings will need to do the trick for Wanderers who were fairly poor up front last season as well as at the back, last seasons squad featured a midfield without enough creativity and a misfiring forward line. The Trotters need Johan Elmander in particular to finally settle into his new league and start finding the net.
Key Man:
Gary Cahill is the defensive rock on which Bolton need to build if they are to start closing out games and conceding fewer goals. The newly capped England international has impressed over the last couple of seasons and will lead the defensive line this season.
Best Buy:
Martin Petrov: Signing from Man City on a free transfer, he was somewhat of a coup for Wanderers. The Bulgarian winger showed real quality during his spell at City but was effectively forced out by the Manchester outfits summer spending spree and Petrov opted to join Bolton. He will provide first class crossing from either flank and possesses a deadly delivery from set pieces along with a good eye for goal himself.
Other Buisness:
In:
Robbie Blake: Known to Coyle from their time together at Burnley, Blake has in the past popped up with important goals for his manager and the forward will be hoping to become foil for Davies and to provide Bolton with the goals the likes of Elmander have failed to score in recent years.
Ivan Klasnic: The Croat joined permenantly after a sucessul loan at the Reebok last term, finishing Bolton's joint top scorer in the league.
Marcos Alonso: The youngster signed from Real Madrid is unlikely to make the first team right away but will be viewed as one for the future and will probably play in the league cup this season.
Tom Eaves: The young scouser will be one for the future and can expect to play most of his football in the reserve team this term.
Rodrigo: Loaned in from Benfica, the 19 year old Brazilian born Spanish forward is unlikely to play regular first team football for Bolton
Out:
Danny Shittu: After a somewhat successful spell at Watford, the Nigerian moved to Bolton. But after playing only a handful of league games he eventually was released.
Danny Ward: The promising forward was promised more first team action by Coyle this season but it seems he meant in a lower division, on loan at Coventry
Chris Basham: Basham looked to be the future of Bolton when he first broke into the first team. Having failed to establish himself in Coyle's first team plans, Basham has opted for first team football with new boys Blackpool
Ricardo Vaz Te: Another player who built up a reputation in his early years with the club under Sam Allardyce, the Portuguese has been allowed to head off to Greece after an injury plagued last three years.
Nicky Hunt: The right back played over 100 games for Bolton but began to find himself on the fringe of the first team and now has moved to pastures new at Bristol City.
Transfer Summary:
Most of this years transfer activity seems to have been geared towards finding the future stars of Wanderers but the permanent signing of Klasnic will be seen as a positive move after his successful loan spell. Robbie Blake is a player familiar to the manager and will become a useful squad player for the Trotters.
