Klecina sugar refinery I, Wrocław. Built in 1837 at the outskirts of Wrocław, sugar refinary was the main employer for the whole neighbourhood built around it. A huge complex was steadily expanded over time, and a narrow gauge train line was also built to secure it’s access to sugar beets. Wrocław became Polish after WW2, and the refinery – now being included in the city limits – started to operate in 1947. In 1989, it recorded its own yearly production record with 36.10 thousand tons of sugar refined.

In one of the most bizarre situations of Polish politics after 1989, Gabriel Janowski – a MP – started to jump and shout during his press conference. Broadly considered as a right wing nut job, Janowski to this day maintains that somebody drugged him before the meeting. However, the meeting was planned to be about the declining sugar refining market in Poland, which Janowski was about to link to an outside intervention of German manufacturers and their unfair competition practices, designed to destroy polish sugar refining industry. However, Klecina sugar refinery was well closed for more almost six years then. In 1990, the Klecina Sugar Factory was transformed into an independent enterprise, and in effect bankrupted and was liquidated in 1994. The sugar factory equipment was sold out and scrapped, while the buildings and the area itself (43 hectares) were bought by the Wrocław municipality. The chimney of the sugar factory, together with the majority of production buildings, were blown up in 1999. During the demolition of the chimney, an official city party was organised, where Bogdan Zdrojewski – then president of Wroclaw and later Minister of Culture of the Republic of Poland – as the host described the planned form of cooperation with private company Code, which pledged to build an aquapark and a shopping centre on the premises of the former sugar factory. In effect, the whole terrain was cleared of any marks of former Klecina Sugar Refinery, with only three small office buildings (turned into housing) left. Code company sold the terrain with huge profit few years later. No aquapark was built.
