Happy 6th Birthday to 96.6 FM KMRD!
Today is my favorite radio stations' birthday! What's KMRD, you ask? In their own words, KMRD is "a freeform, non-commercial, volunteer-run, listener-supported, Low Power FM, community radio station broadcasting from Madrid, New Mexico, USA." My friend Stella founded the station in 2014 and they made their first broadcast 6 years ago, in 2015. KMRD is amazing: in a tiny town of less than 300, KMRD allows people of all ages and backgrounds to learn about radio and run their own shows. They have more than 70 volunteer DJs (!!) and broadcast more than 64 live programs every week. Here's a snapshot of some of the DJs a few years ago:
You can listen to KMRD's programming from absolutely anywhere by visiting https://kmrd.fm/listen/ . I also encourage you to visit their 'Support' page and consider making a birthday donation-- KMRD is fully listener supported, and donations help cover operating costs to keep this station on air. KMRD is a cornerstone of the town of Madrid, promoting technical literacy, education, expression, and community. If you listen today, you'll hear special station IDs from listeners around the world. You might hear mine: this is Claire tuning from Portland, Oregon, and you're listening to KMRD-LP, Madrid, New Mexico
