York Beer Festival LocAle Awards & Festival Specials
Wednesday sees the launch of the biggest event in the York Beer calendar and we’re very pleased to announce that once again the Within the Walls team will be sitting on the judging panel for the LocAle Awards. Each year the CAMRA volunteers work their way through every beer at the festival which is brewed within 25 miles of York to choose the shortlist which we have the honour of judging before the trade session starts on Wednesday. Look out on Twitter & Instagram for exclusive updates during the day as well as the results and obviously we’ll do our best to give you other recommendations of what are our favourites amongst the staggering 500+ beers that are available over the 4 days of the festival. I’ll try my best to review each beer tried over on Untappd as well but another great Twitter account to follow is our good friend Ale Guru who, like us, will be about for most of the festival.
In the meantime I urge your to get perusing the Beer List, as a good beer festival goer always does some prep work, if you’re as geeky as us that is, lol.
But always a good place to start are the Festival Specials, this year to celebrate 10 years of the York & Cider Beer Festival CAMRA got together with 10 local breweries to brew one off specials that will only be available at the festival. Here are the details of those to wet your appetite.
10 Years - 10 Festival Specials
Bad Seed - Juice Generator 5.8% New England Pale. Ultra hazy, juicy hit of US hops with soft bitterness and big tropical fruit flavour. Let the juice loose!
Brass Castle - Deeds Not Words 4.9% Festival special brewed with York CAMRA to commemorate 100 years of suffrage. Cologne-style Kolsch with a blend of juniper, lemon, coriander, angelica & cinnamon.
Brew York - Don Peregrine 8.7% Citra, Simcoe and Vic Secret Brut IPA fermented with New England yeast and served with low carbonation on cask. Festival special. Brewed with York CAMRA.
Half Moon- Skiny Fatte 4.5% Collaboration with Brown Cow Brewery - white coffee porter.
Harrogate - Dunkelweizen 5.9% Dark wheat beer brewed with York CAMRA.
North Riding Brewery - NE Pale 4.3% Collaboration with York CAMRA. Pale Ale using Lallemand New England yeast and Mosaic hops. A hazy, juicy pale with a distinct fruity flavour profile.
Spotlight - Dark Moment 4.2% A session vanilla and blueberry porter dry hopped with Mosaic. Subtle blueberry to begin then chocolate and vanilla followed by a fruitiness.
Treboom - Kopstoot Festival special brewed with chestnuts and flavoured with juniper, orange peel and rosemary.
Turning Point - Yellow Matter Custard 6% Sweet, chewy, and loads of fun. Loaded with vanilla, wheat, and lactose. As close as you can get to custard without getting your eyes wet.
Wetherby - One and Only 4.8% Smooth hazy golden ale with citrus hop notes brewed with York CAMRA.

The scene at #YorkRacecourse this evening after the heavens opened. Torrential #rain and #hail were accompanied with #thunder and #lightning. We went to see Sir #TomJones perform, but unfortunately the show was cancelled due to the #weather. The #horseracing went ahead, and I lost on every single #race. #York #IgersYork #Yorkshire #Knavesmire #YorkRaces #downpour #precipitation #England #Summer #travel #tourism #tourist #leisure #life #event #healthandsafety #eventprofs #riskassessment (at York Racecourse)
