Their relationship is indeed a roller-coaster. At first, Kanato hated Azusa to death, viewing him as a disgusting and worthless being. On the other hand, Azusa was always unhealthily obsessed with his enemie , so he kept on trying to 'steal' Yui just to get a minimum amount of Kanato's attention. When Kanato finally hitted him by the incident with Yui, he couldn't help but enjoy every single second of it, acknowledging that the person whom he loves still percepts him as a freak, a walking worm. At the same time this thought trigger Azusa to the brink of tears, it entices his dark conceptions of what love means, what he was lectured by life about the significance of being loved.
𖹭.ᐟ There's definitely a tension between them, as both are canonically unstable. Azusa is the easiest and always first to crack, and Kanato shamelessly uses it to his advantage. The two crave one another in a twisted and almost cannibalistic way, commiting anthropophagy everytime they touch. Due to Kanato's spoiled and reckless nature, they already engaged in unspeakable and hideous activities as a spell of his own kinks (not that Azusa didn't enjoy, the apple really doesn't fall far from the tree), which results in awful consequences for both of them.
