#knitting: socks

they were supposed to be lemon socks but i think maybe they came out as pineapple socks???

but they're done and i'm happy with them, which is what counts!

yarn is cascade heritage in primavera (green), gold fusion (bright yellow) and lemon (pale yellow, perfectly named!)

pattern is an amalgamation of things from my brain:

68 stitches at cuff, split 32/36, body of foot is 32/32

frill is 4x4 ribbing for 4 rounds, decrease round, 3x3 ribbing round, decrease round, 2x2 ribbing round, 2 plain rounds

12 rounds for a rolled stockinette cuff, then k2tog the two together

start helix broken seed stitching

additional increases on heel side and a contrast sweet tomato heel over the increased half, with 2 rest rounds to look like little lemon wedges (the eagle eyed will spot three equal wedges on one sock and 2.5 on the other because i tried to mess with something that was already working)

after the heel, stockinette on sole and as the arch of the foot starts to resolve, a decrease every third round to come down to 32 stitches

switch to plain for contrast toes, and then a rounded short row toe and the finchley graft to finish it off

Rainbow socks!

spent the last 2 weeks knitting new socks for kiddo - these ones we will not put in the wash with oxygen bleach because it turns out that oxygen bleach works by eating proteins. hey quick question do you know what wool is made of? yeah.

yarn is west yorkshire spinners signature sock yarn in rum paradise (rainbow!) and blackcurrant (perfect contrast as it naturally fits between the red and purple)

sock is, deep breath: cuff down, 56 stitches, 2x2 ribbing transitioning into 6x2 ribbing, increase row 28→35, contrast sweet tomato heel over the increased half, with 2 rest rounds and japanese short rows, decreases done on the sole post-heel every third round (sole is not ribbed), and then a short row toe with the finchley graft on the bottom

next time I would: increase the height before the heel, I did one round of the rainbow and she said "that's good enough!" and it was easy to agree because I also wanted to head on to the heel. They look a little silly and she keeps feeling like they're falling down.

I would also change how I do the sweet tomato heel - I drew out the maths and while increasing and only using the sole stitches is a solid way to sth instead of 2/3 stitches, it actually only needs 2.5 wedges or a different wedge ratio - 10/15/10 would have been better than 14/7/14 as there's a little bump that i didn't notice until it was Too Late

before i did hers, I also made myself a fourth pair of socks, these ones I deliberately did tight because all my socks are too loose and uh. they're too tight? cute tho

at some point i may reclaim the yarn and try again at 64 stitches instead. hilariously the heel is too loose. no winning. perhaps my next pair of socks will be Perfect

hmm I think. I think these might look more like pineapple socks than lemon socks? even with the lemon wedge heel

Finished! The yarn that looked like a summer meadow on my socks looks kinda like a snowy christmas tree on hers, perfect.

Basic toe-up sock: rounded toe, increased to 50 stitches for foot, 2 increases right before a 9/9/9 shadow wrap heel, decreased after. Then slip stitch ribbing, stop after the slip row and 1x1 invisible italian sewn bind off.

Started 30th November, finished yesterday on the 23rd, so 3.5 weeks over all

together... and now apart! lost yarn chicken on one sock with the dark yarn so it's resting on spare needles while I see how much leeway I have in the other tiny ball

and now we heel turn!

the slipped stitches don't quite work at the very bottom because it's pulling up the pale yarn, but you can't win them all (if I did this again I'd knit them instead and also do kfb instead of lifted increases on that first row)

knitting diagrams at work today, I think I know who to make the heels work on these socks, I just need to understand the best way to carry yarn inside if necessary
