Y'all remember the knockout game? It used to be everywhere in the news, snd then kind of fizzled out, but basically there was (reportedly) a rash of assaults attributed to "the knockout game" where an assailant would choose a random victim and attempt to render them unconscious with a single punch before running off.
I'm not sure how widespread it actually was, even in the US, but basically I'm currently thinking about what would happen if Lena were randomly chosen as the victim of such an attack. These guys didn't always wait for a hidden or secluded spot to do it-- sometimes, they even filmed themselves doing it. So like...
It's a normal night. Lena is walking home, or to Kara's. The streetlights are all on and burning brightly. There's absolutely nothing at all to suggest anything amiss.... until she hears the rapid patter of sneakers on pavement behind before everything suddenly goes dark.
At first, when she doesn't get up, the kids (because many of the assailants are teens) are all thrilled and hyping each other up that they managed to get one. She never even saw it coming! But then they lean in for a closer look at the damage... and freeze. It's Lena Luthor.
They just demolished Lena fucking Luthor.
After a moment's panic, they simply flee, sprinting into the dark.
Later, when Lena doesn't arrive on time, and doesn't answer Kara's texts, Kara decides to meet her halfway. After all, Lena had texted her to let her know she was on her way. Perhaps something had grabbed her attention on the way out, waylaying her. Kara doesn't mind a bit of evening air.
But then she sees a body collapsed on the pavement, half draped over the curb and onto the street. A crowd of concerned passersby have begun to gather, soon eclipsing the figure from Kara's sight, but she knows in an instant that it's Lena.
"Let me through! Let me through! That's my friend!" Kara shoves past the growing crowd as gently as her panic allows, dropping to her knees beside Lena. "Lena? Lena!"
"You know her?" a calm voice asks. Another woman kneels at Lena's head, her gaze compassionate but alert.
Kara nods.
"Okay, good. My name is Frankie, and I'm a nurse over at NCUH." She hands Kara her cell phone. "I've called 911, and an ambulance is on it's way. Could you stay on the line with them and give them as much detail about Lena as you can while I assess your friend?"
Kara nods, nearly dropping the phone from the shake in her hands. "H-hello?"
"Hi, I'm Patricia with emergency dispatch. What's your name?"
"K-Kara. Kara Danvers."
"Thank you, Kara. How are you related to the victim?"
"She's my-- my best friend."
"And what's her name?"
The call and response soon helps calms Kara's panic. It gives her something to focus on, a problem to solve when she would have have otherwise been powerless to help.
"Her name is Lena Luthor." She glances at Frankie, who has two fingers pressed against Lena's carotid artery. The woman meets her gaze and nods. "She has a pulse." Kara swallows a sob. "She's alive."
"That's good, Kara. Can you tell me where you are?"
"Hope Street and.... 2nd," Kara responds, spying the sign for the cross street.
"Excellent," Patricia tells her. "An emergency response team is on its way to you, it's almost there. Do you know what happened to Lena?"
Kara blinks back tears. "I don't know. She was supposed to meet me-- she was running late so I came out to meet her, and I just-- she was just... lying here! I don't know what to do..."
"You're doing it right now, Kara. Just take a deep breath for me, all right? What's Lena's birth date?"
And so the questions continue, until the ambulance arrives and Frankie rattles off a series of stats at the paramedics who swoop in to take her place. The police who arrive want to talk to them, Kara included, but she refuses to be anywhere but in the ambulance with Lena.
She rides along in the back, Lena's slack fingers gripped tightly in her own as the paramedics operate as an efficient team.
Please be all right, Kara begs silently. I can't lose you too.
REVIEW
The Suit by Colin Conway
509 Crime Stories #4
Bored? Why not start a “game” that will see who can win the most points for knocking people out with one punch. You know, walk up to a stranger, land a punch and knock them out with the hope of winning the prize. Matt, Ex-Marine turned drug dealer, has nothing to keep his crew happy so dreams up restarting the knockout game and that is probably the worst choice he could have made.
This book is definitely a police procedural to find out who is behind the knockout game with the intention of rounding the culprits up and then incarcerating them. In addition to the team effort made by the police there is the story of Matt’s crew and the knockout game. And finally there is the part of the story that really drew me in...the story about Adam Miller, ex-military Delta Force, and his impact on the game.
What I liked:
* Adam – I really found him intriguing and wished there were more men out and about that were just like him. I loved the way he cared for Candace and the way he did not back down.
* Leya Navarro – Seeing what her life was like as a beat cop, team member, mother and wife was like being a fly on the wall. I really hope she will choose to take the exam and take larger parts in future books in the series.
* Detective Marci Burkett – talk about a strong woman with a backstory I am eager to hear more about! She is a great role modell for females of all ages.
* The plotting and pace of the story
* The conclusion
What I did not like:
* The men who were willing and eager to play the knockout game – scum of the earth.
* Realizing once again how easily some can be lead to do wrong or be suckered into addiction
What I am curious to know more about:
* Quinn Delaney – would love to know more about him
* Zane Ingram (FBI) and whether he will ever get a date with Marci
* Marci Burkett – would love to know more about her
I can see a spin off series for Andrew in the future...maybe. I can also see some of the characters in this story starring in future books and some of them being promoted.
Did I like this book? Yes
Would I read more in the series? Definitely
Thank you to the author for the ARC – this is my honest review.
5 Stars
BLURB
A crew looking for some kicks. A hero tortured by his past. All on a collision course with death. It’s called the Knockout Game—a violent one-punch assault on random strangers. Years ago, it faded like a bad memory, but now it’s back—with a vengeance. But this time it’s been twisted into an act of retaliation against the corporate image of the 1%—men in suits and ties. No man is safe walking through downtown. Those playing the game are terrorizing a city and the police seem helpless to stop it. When the game expands to murder, Detectives Quinn Delaney and Marci Burkett join the hunt. As more victims hit the ground, the police are running out of time. What they have yet to understand is that this has always been about one suit. And he’s ready to fight back. The Suit is the fourth book in The 509 Crime Stories, a series of novels set in Eastern Washington with revolving lead characters. If you like thrillers with fast-paced action, then you’ll love this story. Pick up The Suit and join this exciting new series today!
Police say that a 59-year-old man who was found dead at a fall fair in Maryland may have been an innocent victim of a pair of teens' twisted game.
Their parents must be real proud.

Brass Knuckle Knockout Game Teen Charged As An Adult
This brass knuckle clad punk decided to sucker punch this other guy in the face. Then once on the floor, he continued to pound on him. Y’all can see that in the very last post before this one, I was complaining about how so many people are locked up for long periods of time, for crimes that are minor and petty. Then you see a video like this, and a potential sentence of 20 years. I’m curious what…
