"Intellectual deen"..Why am I used to declare it?
By Allah, It's truly a big luck of mine since I born as muslimah. It's not too much, but It's what I feel stronger about day by day. I told everyone that I am trying hard to keep being a learner. Yaa, I love knowledge and goodness as much as I love this religion (I prefer using "deen" rather than "belief/religion"). by performing seeking the truth, knowledge, I do love Islam more and more, I find the beauty of Islam gradually.
When I was kid, My Qur'an-teacher told me a history about the first verse derived to Prophet Muhammad (SAW). with not much understanding at that time, I finally captured that it was Surah Al-'Alaq 1-5 became the first Kalam (saying) of Allah to Prophet Muhammad (SAW).
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
"Proclaim (or READ)! (Jibril repeated it three times whilst embraced Prophet Muhammad (SAW)....in the name of thy Lord and Cherisher, Who created. Created man, out of a (mere) clot of congealed blood. Proclaim! And thy Lord is Most Bountiful. He Who taught (the use of) the Pen. Taught man that which he knew not."
PROCLAIM (read). What is your opinion about it? Is it not awkward enough that Allah instructed His Messenger to read, in His first Message?? I used to feel like that..I asked my mind, why not "Salaah (Pray)", "Dhikr (remembrance of Allah)", "Hajj (pilgrim to Meccah-Medinah)", "Shaum (fasting)" became the first intruction? I thought those were more suitable to displace "Iqra' (proclaim/read!)".
Then Allaah, Thy All-Knowing, fixed my ignorance..
Because Allah wants us to be a LEARNER!! that's the objective of those noble verses.. Allah guides us to leave SUBMISSION without UNDERSTANDING. This deen is a logic thing, that we can reveal by knowledge, even (some of) by science. Islam is NOT a set of unquestionable doctrines, where mind is totally thrown away. Allah want us to advance the understanding before the practice.
Broadly, reading can be defined as finding the truth, reading the signs of Allah. Then, we can find Allah on His own. Yes, "READING" leads us from the darkness to the light. Subhanallah!!
Al-'Alaq 1-5 succeed to be the prime message of the whole Al-Qur'an!! find out, Al-Qur'an was composed of real KNOWLEDGEs ever. and the whole need a deep thinking to understand.. furthermore Al-Qur'an leads us to be intellectual ones.
"Will ye not understand?" Al-Baqarah:44
" Thus doth Allah Make clear to you His Signs: In order that ye may consider." Al-Baqarah:219
"Thus do We explain the Signs in detail for those who reflect." Yunus:24
The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said: “One who treads a path in search of knowledge has his path to Paradise made easy by God…” - Riyadhus-Saleheen, 245
The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said: "If anyone travels on a road in search of knowledge, God will cause him to travel on one of the roads of Paradise. The angels will lower their wings in their great pleasure with one who seeks knowledge. The inhabitants of the heavens and the Earth and (even) the fish in the deep waters will ask forgiveness for the learned man. The superiority of the learned over the devout is like that of the moon, on the night when it is full, over the rest of the stars. The learned are the heirs of the Prophets, and the Prophets leave (no monetary inheritance), they leave only knowledge, and he who takes it takes an abundant portion. - narrated by Abu-Dawood, Hadith 1631
This is still a cramped thought of mine. You may have a broader understanding of what "Islam as Intellectual deen" means. Please share me..
