Knowtice Music: Talking Heads
“This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)”
(Live: Stop Making Sense)
I woke up this morning with this little ditty playing in my head, so thought I would share. I’ve been listening to the studio version of this track for MANY years & just recently re-discovered the live version from the album "Stop Making Sense.” Tis’ Genius!! I actually first owned this gem on vinyl. 👍🎸👍
Here’s a little background on the album…
Stop Making Sense is a 1984 concert movie featuring a live performance by Talking Heads. Directed by Jonathan Demme, it was shot over the course of three nights at Hollywood’s Pantages Theater in December 1983, as the group was touring to promote their new album Speaking in Tongues. The movie is notable for being the first made entirely using digital audio techniques. The title comes from the lyrics of the song “Girlfriend Is Better”: “As we get older and stop making sense…”. The film has been hailed by Leonard Maltin as “one of the greatest rock movies ever made”, and Pauline Kael of The New Yorker described it as “…close to perfection.” (Source: Wikipedia)
Sometimes it’s the allure of simplicity that is most complex to accomplish. A steady 120 beat-per-minute shuffle, irresistible whistling melody, shyly nuanced synth line, and highly-charged vocal later, and you’ve got one of the best pop songs of all times glowing in its wake. This track has never really left the public’s consciousness since its release in the early 80’s, and only continues to stamp relevancy over modern culture with acts like Psychemagik resurrecting the cut into an extended disco monster for today’s dance clubs. Out of the many songs the Talking Heads can claim as influential, “This Must Be The Place” undoubtedly tops the list in every way.
