The wonderful @peskipixi has asked me to post this on her behalf, which i have happily agreed to:

Dear all. Everyone by now knows that we have devastating fires here in Knysna, South Africa. Firstly, we are personally fine, our house JUST made it by the grace of God, but more than 10,000 people were not that lucky. We have several friends who lost everything. So I am calling on everyone out there to please help if you can. I have set up a bank account to receive donations, which I will split into using to buy supplies and donating to a charity called Gift of the Givers. Please, it doesn't have to be much, anything you can spare. I  thank everyone for their prayers and thoughts. I am currently off line as we have no power, water or electricity, and I thank my good friend Angryschnauzer for posting this. Much love.

But sometimes its hard to imagine this, so with Pixi’s permission, i am sharing some before and after photos;

Here is the fantastic Roxy the collie, during an evening run in their garden this summer, enjoying the lush green grass beneath her paws:

And a still taken from a video Pixi sent me of two wild deer at the bottom of her garden a few weeks ago:

Again, beautiful and lush, such a beautiful place. 

Until this happened:

Can you imagine standing at the end of your garden only to see a raging inferno advancing towards your home? I know i can’t.

So Pixi did what she could before they were evacuated, using hosepipes to dampen down her property:

But in the end it wasn’t enough and they couldn’t stay for the sake of their lives:

Roxy certainly wont be running barepaw over that part of the garden. And those two deer?:

Not much for them to both coming to chew on now.

So please, if you can donate anything, it will all be appreciated, as not everyone was as ‘lucky’ as Pixi.

There’s a giant fire consuming the town of Knysna South Africa and surrounding areas right now. This is a link to the twitter tag search. I don’t know if any of my followers know anyone in the area but reblog this to signal boost, it’s not getting much coverage yet. Spread the word and hopefully they can get some aid in the coming days. There are houses and people in danger right now.

Update, the good the bad and the ugly. Knysna is slowly coming to, like a boxer that took a knockout blow and rises slowly, shaking his head. Yesterday there was another howling wind, which caused massive flare-ups everywhere, but by last night they were contained. This morning I woke up to slightly clearer skies, having slept without a smoke mask for the first time. No red glow down the valley. No ominously glowing spots at the bottom of my garden. But most of all, I woke up with hope. Even yesterday, I could see the expressions of shock and devastation slowly morph into expressions of fierce determination. We are picking ourselves up from the ashes. The outpouring of love and help has been staggering. Truckloads of stuff just pouring into town, it's so humbling I cry every time. The human spirit is the most amazing thing ever created. The photos are: 1. An areal view of just one neighbourhood (across the valley from us) indicating which houses were lost. 2. Brenton-on-Sea burning, seen from my garden yesterday afternoon. 3. A gentleman I only know as Mmusi from East London (about 5 hours east of Knysna) who found himself in Knysna and just pitched in. We worked side by side for hours, he was unstoppable! 4. Pup also pitching in organising food cans and other stuff. Knysna fire funds update: Dear friends, just an update. The fire has been vanquished, and we can really sleep easy for the first time in 5 days. There are a few smouldering hotshots that are being monitored, but in general, the danger has passed. On a personal note, we have been able to do 3 supply runs for the firefighters (about $190), buy two kids that lost their houses school uniforms (around $140) (one lot of which I forgot to take a pic of, duh) and will be buying small sets of crockery and cutlery for two households tomorrow (around $30) I am so thankful for everyone's contribution, and so happy that we were able to help in a tiny way. Lastly... We will continue to rebuild, but I promise this blog will be returning to normal programming soon. Much love Peski

Humanitarian support is being co-ordinated for an estimated 8 000-10 000 residents of the greater Knysna area, after devastating fires last night. The Western Cape town has been subjected to raging fires over the past few days. Firefighters battling the rampant and vicious fires that broke out in Knysna are considering water bombing areas, as they are still not under control, and could begin to spread again. People's faces tell a story of a hard night wrestling a fire that they might have underestimated or did not see coming.

Thousands of people have been evacuated from the area where a total of four people have lost their lives since Wednesday. Knysna fire chief Clint Manuel said: "We are still fighting the fire within the town area as well as the fire that has passed the town. Firemen fight a blaze in the Kranshoek area in South Africa on Wednesday, June 7, 2017.We have resources from as far as Cape Town. CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape government says it's awaiting direction from national government on whether to declare Knysna a disaster area because of a devastating fire.

People experienced in fire-fighting have been called to urgently respond to fight the raging inferno in the Western Cape. At the same time, helicopters have joined efforts to douse fires in various parts of Knysna as residents come to terms with the devastating effects of the blazes.The boy who died in the Knysna fire on Wednesday had been celebrating his third birthday, while his mom, who also died, was eight months pregnant. Simultaneous fires starting at the same time "raises a big red flag" and suggests "deliberate agency"‚ says forensic investigator David Klatzow. Worst-hit was Knysna, a town of 77,000 people 500km east of Cape Town on South Africa's famed Garden Route, as firefighters battled to quell 26 fires along the tourist trail. It sent families fleeing into the night to seek refuge at churches and yacht clubs.
