Every gate wall has double names. One shows the direction, such as "East" gate; the other has an elegant and meaningful name, such as "Feng-Yi" gate in this pic. The one with a name with direction would be on the inside for fear the enemy tells the direction immediately. 

城門通常會有兩個名字，「東門」這種有代表方位的名字會刻在內門額，而「鳳儀門」這類看不出位置的名字則置外門額，目的是要避免敵人一下子就知道方位。
