A Deal with Darkness

The murky waters that surrounded Darkheart's domain were as calm as ever, gently patting against the shoreline. The deity themselves were sitting on the edge of their favorite pier, whistling a soft tune to themselves. They seemed content after all of the chaos that they've been enduring. But they weren't expecting to find themselves in a situation like this... They froze up, their shadowed eyes trained on the waters around them. Something was shifting, moving beneath the surface. A fish? Most likely, but the deity couldn't help but think this fish moved... Oddly. It's motions more fluid, a sense of purpose behind every swish and flicker of their tail. The deity grew a touch concerned as a shadow slowly crept upwards before.... Before the head of a woman peeked out of the water, shimmering orange eyes staring up at them. The deity was silent, the other demon was silent. A heaviness filled the space between them before the other demon spoke up. "Are.... Are you the deity Darkheart?" Her voice came out soft, almost unsure of herself. "Yes. We are. Why have you come into our domain, young lady?" The deity hummed, leaning downwards the water as they gently tugged on their fishing rod, pulling it out of the water. "You.... You deal with curses, yes? Do you know how to break them? Or maybe even alter them?" She pushed her voice up a little more, desperately trying to hide her fear. She was always told not to mess with deities, that some of them could do more harm than good. But she needed to know, she needed to know if there was a way to break her curse. The deity fell silent at the question, their head still lowered towards the woman. They did in fact deal with curses, they did in fact know HOW to break them, or alter them, but they needed to know why. "And why are you asking, little mortal...? Curses are a strong thing you know... Only a deity as powerful as us could possibly help you... But we must know WHY first." The deity leaned back slightly, lazily tossing one leg over the other as they waited. The merdemon sighed softly before swimming over to the shoreline, pulling her upper half out of the water, part of her tail following suit. She whined a little, she didn't like how the ground here felt under her hands. "I-I... I-I want my tail gone, deity.... I-I want to be like other merdemons...! Or well, like my brother... Please! Please I beg...! Can you make this go away? Can you take the curse that's fused my legs together into this tail....?" Darkheart flinched slightly at how desperate the woman sounded. Darkheart wasn't one to sympathize easily with strangers. But the woman's voice, her sheer desperation, it had the deity's heart breaking. They exhaled softly before standing, walking over to the merdemon. "You do realize that there will be side effects, yes? You can have your legs, but you will have to struggle with something else to achieve them. This is unfortunately something we are unable to prevent. One cannot have the good without the bad." The deity explained, watching the woman intensely. They had more to say, but the merdemon interrupted them. "I-I do not care about the side effects...! Just. Just please, deity... All I want is to be like my brother.... To walk on the land! And... And maybe walk with..." Her voice trails off, her cheeks flushing slightly as she thought about a red demon she had met. She was going to speak, but Darkheart interrupted her right back. "As you wish."

The Loneliest Little Mermaid

A gentle breeze rustled the leaves of the nearby trees, thick veins dangling from the branches. Flowers bloomed around the edges of the large pond with a waterfall that rushed down into it, a small cloud of white mist forming where the rushing waves touched the stillness of the pond, all being nestled with the center of the lush kingdom of Thieves' Den. Sat atop of a rock, part of her form being hidden behind the rushing waters, was a beautiful merdemon. Body white with specs of black and orange hues trailing all over her, long tail tipped partly into the water. Her long, flowy hair cascaded down her back and bounced over her shoulders slightly, starting off white and tapering off into delicate orangey-pink hue. Koistaff, alongside her younger brother, were the only two remaining merdemons, most of their species having been wiped out many moons ago. The koi demon sat there, running a brush through her long hair as she took in the sounds around her. Chirping birds, skittering animals, the sound of fish playing around with other fish in her pond. The waterfall's intensity became almost something akin to a lullaby to her, soothing her fired up nerves as she listened to it. Truth be told, despite even having her brother, she felt alone in the world. Unlike her brother, Koi was unable to walk on land. She was unable to last out of the water for long periods of time, rendering it a struggle to go out anywhere due to the curse that not only infected her arm, but had fused her legs together into the tail she had to this day. She sighed softly and placed her brush down, gazing upwards into the waterfall with a frown. Part of her longed for a time where she too could roam free, feel the soft grass under her feet, wiggle her toes into the cool water and feel the winds brush up against her thighs. A heavy feeling set into her chest as her tail curled upwards into itself, the merdemon hunching over slightly. She knew this day would never come. She knew that no matter how hard she wished, she'd be stuck like this. A trapped little guppy, protected by the Spirit Guardian to ensure her safety. She appreciated what he did, and she made habit of showing it in any way possible, but part of her didn't want to be trapped within the walls of the kingdom, only going out when she felt like she had a good, trusted reason too. She wanted to be free too. To have a freedom that her little brother. She was lonely. So very lonely. And it was a kind of loneliness that ate her up inside whenever she remembered just how much of a fish in a tank she was.
