im so confused by this so im just gonna ask this

so what did the actual writing under shuichis picture on kokichis board say??? like nisa localisation put it to say trustworthy, your posts say it was meant to be untrustworthy, and the literal translation from @/oumakokichi says its more like stay cautious or tricky to figure out.

And here are some translations that I found of 油断ならない from Japanese Dictionary Takoboto, Google Translate, and Jisho:

To my knowledge, the meaning is probably closer to untrustworthy than anything else because when I looked it up a while ago (and just now to double-check) I only got one search result that said "tricky" and several more that said "untrustworthy" or something close to it, so I went with untrustworthy because it was closer to what the English version and all of these other translations said it meant.

I guess tricky could also work? It feels like it doesn't faithfully get the full message across though imo... As for the other, Kokichi writing "stay cautious" under Shuichi's picture would also imply a lack trustworthiness towards him so I'd say that it's the same as what I said just in a different wording.

You can research it as well if you would like but, at the very least, I think it's safe to say that regardless of whether someone says it means "tricky" or "untrustworthy" that a certain amount of distrust is implied from the original word.

This isn't very well-written but I wanted to say it

As much as I love having reasons to not ship sai*uma I don't like it when people use what Kokichi did in Chapter 5 (making everyone suicidal) as a reason to not like the ship.

Not only does it sort of imply that Kokichi did it out of malice or that he had bad intentions, it also seems to be convenient...? Or more like they're using that evidence selectively.

If we're saying that Kokichi can't be shipped with people who he made suicidal—

-by showing them what he thought was the truth to make them understand why the killing game is pointless, a genuinely good intention albeit with a morally grey execution, but that's not what I want to talk about-

—then by default he can't be shipped with anyone from chapter 5 (aside from Maki who wasn't suicidal but that's...) either, including Kiibo (who he actually has a bit of natural potential with), even though it's very clear that Kiibo (or anyone for that matter) didn't resent him for it and that Kokichi was trying help by showing them the harsh reality.

Not only do I disagree with using ch5 as evidence, but I also think that seeing someone who likes kiib*uma use that as evidence against sai*uma is just... :|

that point about everybody hating kokichi before ch 4!!! so true. it basically just seems like they don’t like him because the plot needs them too? like yeah i would get if they thought he was annoying or something because yeah, but they just hate this dude? like he gets a really bad head injury during the ch 3 investigation and nobody,,,cares?? they just let him go? it’s infuriating. they probably just needed to hate him because before that there wouldn’t be anyone really and uh,,,dr needs antag character?? at least that’s my thought, does that make sense?

That's pretty much what I think as well, even in the first couple of chapters they were already saying that he was untrustworthy and that he probably didn't care if anyone died (ch2) but what had he done besides pull pranks and say stuff that the group didn't want to hear?

This “tell, don’t show” narrative style is driving me up a wall.

I actively got frustrated playing as Shuichi because I liked Kokichi so much and constantly seeing Shuichi misunderstand and disliking him made me :( . and then I get into the fandom, and see people ignoring all that and insisting that the two characters are perfect for each other and any other ships with the two of them are Bad (especially m/f ships, because this is the DR fandom we're talking about) and I just-- :((( ??? We talk about what a rat bastard Kokichi is, but also the man deserves a better fucking ship than to get stuck with a detective that actively avoids trying to understand the truth to his intentions.

I don't get why they all hated him so much in the earlier chapters. It always seemed like they hated him for no real reason at all, as if he were the designated punching bag.

Mini Analysis – A Kinda Kind Lie

At first glance it looks like Kokichi is being an idiot and an asshole when he tells everyone that since Monokuma got crushed there is no final boss and that the killing game is over and tells Kaede to shut up. I mean, the Monokubs did just say that they needed to get strong because they're the new headmasters, didn't they?

However, later when Kaede and Shuichi leave the library after seeing the black and white door, we see can the true intention behind it.

Right after they leave the library Shuichi tells Kaede not to tell anyone that there might be a traitor that will keep the killing game going even though Monokuka is dead specifically because he doesn't want to cause a panic.

Meaning that the group wasn't panicking at the moment -> because they thought the killing game was over -> because Kokichi told them that it was.

Keep in mind that he started lying right after the First Blood Perk, a motive, was revealed. We already had Rantaro point out that this motive was designed to make them stop cooperating before this, so after that Kokichi must've concluded that taking advantage of this opportunity (Monokuma blowing up) to make people think the game was over would keep them from trying to use the perk.

The narrative also hints at this being a kind lie because this was just moments after he said "it was was one of those lies to keep us more unified" and "did you know that half of my lies are told with good intentions" which comes off as a direct foreshadowing for this and his other actions during the game.

So the reason why Kokichi told Kaede to shut up when she (logically) tried to tell everyone that the killing game might not be over yet? It's because she was poking holes in his kind lie and was going to cause them to panic and murder each other.

Still a dick move to turn everyone against her when she's only telling the truth, but what would you rather have: a sad (but alive) girl or dead friends + the start of the killing game?

I can't tell if he's disappointed that they're trying to brush off the flashback light or if he's disappointed that they believed any of it despite it being so obviously faked.

Leaning towards the latter.

Also Shuichi back at it again with disliking Kokichi I see.

I had to clip the conversation again, but here's the long and short of it.

It's amazing how Kokichi and Angie figured it out before Shuichi even after Tsumugi just got done telling Shuichi that this place doesn't really seem like a school at all and looked to be built just for them. We've been over this but you're still behind the others...
