THANK YOU for recommending I watch KOKKOKU, besides an extremely rad intro sequence and song this was a fantastic sci-fi fantasy story and now one of Rev and mine’s favorites. SPOILER FREE SUMMARY:

This 12 episode series is about a regular suburban family who happen to be in possession of a stone that can freeze a single moment in time, which tangles them up with a cult leader and his hired killers. Frozen time is also inhabited by a couple varieties of creatures, which are fantastically bizarre and critically important to the story. If you love the better written SCP’s or generally enjoy science fiction and fantasy narratives that explore the rules of an anomalous scenario or supernatural powers, you’ll love this one. The characters are also very down to earth and realistic instead of feeling like “anime characters,” it’s really about how an ordinary family deals with bizarre circumstances and there are many touches of everyday realism, from their emotional reactions to just little physics things and annoyances that I don’t usually see portrayed in media. For content warnings, there’s some gruesome imagery and a lot of blood but no bloody deaths happen on-screen in full view. There’s a point at which some villain henchmen argue about whether to commit a rape, but are stopped. An attempt to kill the main heroine is brutally realistic as she’s pinned and strangled, but she escapes, and for a cool reason I won’t spoil. The only sex or fanservice at all are some ending credits images that are relatively tasteful by anime standards. No children or animals are killed. That about covers everything; it would have probably gotten a PG-13 as a live action film.
