“Though The Köln Concert quickly went on to become regarded as a classic and amassed sales of four million (to date, it’s still the best-selling piano album of all time), remarkably, the concert almost never happened.
Jarrett’s request, had arranged for a Bösendorfer 290 Imperial concert grand piano to be provided for the show. Unfortunately, the opera house staff wheeled out the wrong piano – a much smaller Bösendorfer baby grand. To make matters worse, it was a piano used for opera rehearsals and was in abject condition and badly out of tune.”

Jarrett made a broken piano work for him. He began with a 4 note improvisation and expanded the improv as he adjusted to what actually worked on the piano.

To me, this song is a beginning. The first track on an album, and the first four notes are themselves an entrance, a call into the amazing theater and world that is Keith Jarrett’s Koln Concert. Being in Talloires too is a beginning. Only a week into the program and there are so many new beginnings here. New friends, new places, and a new culture. I realize that my time here is limited, but I’m going to make the best of it. This is just a beginning.
The Köln Concert Part 1, Keith Jarrett Hakata St. Fukuoka/Japan Probably one of my all-time favorite mellow Jazz recordings. Back in the 1970s, I bought my ex- a copy of the vinyl LP and have since listened only to a cassette copy of it. But even in that poor quality copy, I just find it so relaxing and soothing.
