Beyond the Occupation - Sights of Köln, Germany
In Fred Baragar’s letter of 14 December 1918, we learn that the Canadians of the First Division had "entered the city of Cologne” and crossed the Rhine on 13 December 1918 as part of the armistice occupation activities.
Fred would spend several days in that region, and a Christmas card home to Canada that year featured the names of the officers of the fourth battery (including Fred) behind a cover emblazoned with a silhouette of Köln’s famous cathedral - the Kölner Dom (watch for the card on From The Somewhere over Christmas!).
We hope that the photographs shown here - images of the Köln Cathedral’s interior and exterior, as well as a river view - give our readers a sense of the sights that many Canadian soldiers would have seen in mid-December 1918. Particularly noteworthy, given the Christmas season, are the tombs for the remains of the “Three Wise Men” housed in the Cathedral, two of which are shown above.
