I was cosplaying as Komui Lee from D.Gray-Man (always a fun character to embody!). My friend snapped this picture of me, very seriously, reading The Art of War by Sun Tzu. We thought it would be a hilarious and perfectly in-character contrast for Komui, who, despite his eccentricities, is a strategic leader. It's one of those little, silly moments at a con that always makes me smile!

I wanted to do a #cosplayglowup but I couldn't find a good pic of JJ that I really liked. But this works so... Anyway! I've been cosplaying since 2006 but Komui was my first really hard project. I spent months on his jacket, sewing in corners, making sculpey buttons (which all broke), handstitching the entire piece. I was also a freshman in college and did a lot of this in my dorm in New York, and then I promptly wore it outside and the bottom got all dingy and gross no matter how much I attempted to handwash it. But I was proud. I made his pin out of cardboard and duct tape, made a drill also out of cardboard and duct tape, and I used a wig that looked surprisingly natural. Ten years later and I made JJ, one of my newest outfits but the one that required the most work of 2017--I spent like a whole week? I realized I'm a whole lot better at corner work, speed sewing (I can't even count how many costumes I've made in under a week now), and using things that just hold better or look less cheap. I color my eyebrows, get decent quality wigs, and I just actually learned to sew a whole lot better. I've learned to make pants, skirts, blazers, throw on zippers, sew on spandex, glitter spray... man. A lot. And I'm delving back into a slow start on prop making for next year. Cosplay is a fun but intense hobby for me. I so it for the selfies, for hanging out, for improving my own skills. I look at where I've come, from that person who took months to make one simple piece like a jacket and look at where I am now, making a leotard in like 6 hours and shoving plastic under it so I can paint on it wearing it without painting it to my flesh again (real life cosplay story, 2014).
