Anyway yeah here's 5 more German conjunctions you may not have known of!

1. indessen (seldom 'indes')

Meaning: whereas Type: subordinating (moves verb to end). Synonyms: wohingegen, während Frequency (based on Duden): 3/5, slightly common, outdated + elevated Example usage: Die einen gingen spazieren, indessen die anderen es vorzogen, zu lesen. Translation: The first lot went walking, whereas the others preferred to read.

2. insofern

Meaning: insofar/in this respect Type: subordinating (moves verb to end). Synonyms: falls, für den Fall Frequency (based on Duden): 3/5, slightly common Example usage: Insofern sie in der Lage ist, will sie dir helfen. Translation: Insofar as she is able to, she wants to help you.

3. gleichwohl

Meaning: although Type: subordinating (moves verb to end). Synonyms: obgleich, obwohl Frequency (based on Duden): 2/5, rare, regional Example usage: Gleichwohl die Diskussion über die Umsetzung des Resozialisierungsgedankens bereits viele Jahrzehnte erfolgt,... Translation: Although the debate about the implementation of the idea of resocialising has been taking place for many decades,...

4. geschweige [denn]

Meaning: let alone Type: subordinating (moves verb to end). Synonyms: ganz zu schweigen von Frequency (based on Duden): 3/5, slightly common Example usage: Ich glaube nicht, dass er anruft, geschweige [denn] dass er kommt. Translation: I don't think he'll call, let alone come.

5. soviel

Meaning: as far as Type: subordinating (moves verb to end). Synonyms: soweit Frequency (based on Duden): 2/5, rare Example usage: sie hat Urlaub, soviel ich weiß Translation: As far as I know, she's on holiday.

This is the last one of this mini-series because I'm gonna have to start going into conjunctions which have been used like once, ever, otherwise. So I hope you enjoyed the 20 rare(r) conjunctions I've written about and yeah :D

1. ferner

Meaning: furthermore/moreover Type: subordinating (moves verb to end). Synonyms: außerdem, des Weiteren. Frequency (based on Duden): 3/5, slightly common. Example usage: Wir brauchen eine Zange und einen Bohrer, ferner einige Dübel und Schrauben. Translation: We need pliers and a drill, also an anchor plug and screws.

2. maßen

Meaning: because Type: subordinating (moves verb to end). Synonyms: weil, denn. Frequency (based on Duden): 2/5, rare + outdated (don't even think of using it) Example usage: https://de.wiktionary.org/wiki/maßen#Konjunktion > Look at 'Beispiele'

3. unerachtet (not ungeachtet)

Meaning: although Type: subordinating (moves verb to end). Synonyms: obwohl, obgleich. Frequency (based on Duden): 1/5, very rare. Example usage: Unerachtet es stärker zu regnen begann als je, ... so riet ich doch. Translation: Although it began to rain heavier than ever, I kept on riding (riet here is Althochdeutsch, today it would be 'ritt').

4. währenddem

Meaning: whereas/whilst Type: subordinating (moves verb to end). Synonyms: während, währenddessen Frequency (based on Duden): 1/5, very rare + regional. Example usage: Ich tippte einen Brief, währenddem legte Paul Rechnungen ab. Translation: I typed a letter, whereas Paul drew up the accounts.

5. zwar... aber...

Meaning: (al)though Type: ??? See example for word order Synonyms: obwohl Frequency (based on Duden): N/A Example usage: Sie ist zwar 47, sieht aber wie 30 aus. Translation: Although she's 47, she looks 30.

I did the first part of this 5 months ago lmfao, I’m so organised.

1. gleichwie.

Meaning: just like/as (if). Type: subordinating (moves verb to end). Synonyms: gleichsam, quasi, [ebenso] wie Frequency (based on Duden): 2/5, rare + elevated Example usage: gleichwie der Regen und Schnee vom Himmel fällt . Translation: just like the rain and snow falling from the sky.

2. sowenig... auch.

Meaning: as little as/however little. Type: subordinating (moves verb to end). Synonyms: ??? Frequency (based on Duden): 2/5, rare Example usage: sowenig er auch davon weiß, er will immer mitreden. Translation: as little he knows of it, he always want to join the conversation.

3. wiewohl.

Meaning: although Type: subordinating (moves verb to end). Synonyms: obwohl, obgleich, obschon Frequency (based on Duden): 2/5, rare + elevated Example usage: seine Aussage ist einleuchtend, wiewohl der Beweis nicht ganz einfach war . Translation: his statement is plausible, although the proof/evidence for it was not so simple.

4. derweil.

Meaning: while/whilst Type: subordinating (moves verb to end). Synonyms: während, indessen Frequency (based on Duden): 3/5, slightly common Example usage: derweil er mit den Kindern spielte, arbeitete sie Translation: whilst he played with the children, she worked.

5. wohingegen.

Meaning: whereas Type: subordinating (moves verb to end). Synonyms: indessen, hingegen Frequency (based on Duden): 2/5, rare Example usage: er hat blondes Haar, wohingegen seine Geschwister alle dunkelhaarig sind Translation: he hat blond hair, whereas his siblings all had dark-coloured hair.
