things like this make me realize that I’m old because it was mandatory for my class to take French from grade 1

The funny thing is that’s actually what happens at my school, now, too; when I was in grade 5 or 6 they decided to switch it from grade 4 to grade 1, and it’s still that way today. But that’s not really the norm, here; my old elementary school is kind of an exception. I’m pretty sure public schools in BC still start in grade 4 most of the time.
