Same. I think it was made during the election and he thought Hilary would win. I might be wrong
It ended with footage of Charlottesville, the murder of Heather Heyer, and Trump calling the people there “very fine people.” There’s a part of the klansmen chanting “America first!” which was the refrain of Trump’s inauguration speech (although in the movie’s defense it’s a phrase with a long anti-semitic and racist history and wouldn’t have been out of place).
There were a few other parts with clear connections to the present-day alt-right, the proud boys, Richard Spencer, and the attempt to re-brand racism as some sort of intellectual love and pride of White people and European culture that I thought was again rather heavy-handed, but again, that’s kind of Spike Lee’s style.
Anyway it was still a good movie in the end, very entertaining. I read a couple of reviews talking about how Lee used a lot of the cinematic techniques pioneered by Birth of a Nation in scenes that talk about how the movie revived the klan and inspired lynchings, which made me pretty happy as a film history geek.
