Support your local gif makers! In celebration of my one year gif-iversary, I am posting shoutouts to gif makers who have motivated and inspired me with their creativity in the past year. This post is for Kat, whose gifs can be found here.
I don’t remember how or when I found Kat’s blog, but I was instantly pulled in by their beautiful animation gifs. Kat has an impressive level of motivation and drive to create gifs that is truly inspiring, and they have even made over 200 gifsets of Frozen! Their dedication to their craft shines brightly, and I love seeing their new content on my dash. One night, I was feeling down on myself and made a post about my disappointment in my level of giffing skills, and Kat saw the post and immediately responded with words of encouragement. This meant so much to me to hear from someone at their skill level, and I still go back and read that reply sometimes when I start to feel discouraged.
MUST-SEE EDITS
Frozen 2 Cast - Kat has an impeccable talent for sharpening that is unlike any other gif maker I have seen. In this gifset, they placed side-by-side the Frozen 2 cast reading lines and their animated characters saying those lines. This is not only a super creative and interesting way to show the cast recording, but also a testament to Kat’s love of all things Frozen. The deep blacks and bright blues in this set play off of each other perfectly.
Mike Wazowski #mood - This gifset never fails to make me smile. In this set, Kat exemplified their extraordinary gift for sharpening (which is unreasonably hard to do with animation), and we feel like we are almost inside the scene. In this set, you can see every fiber and detail, and even the texture of Mike’s skin. The work done to brighten and color the yellows of this scene and maintain the darkness of the shadows should not go unnoticed.
New Year’s Eve (Winnie the Pooh) - In this gifset, Kat proved that they truly can do it all, creating an adorable, cheerful little edit of a 2D animation. This one is special because the colors serve to convey the lighthearted mood, and as a seasoned gif maker, Kat understands that less can sometimes be more; rather than over-saturating the colors of the scene, they softened these blues, pinks, and yellows in a calming way. The cyan sky in the first gif truly stands out and paints the scene.
Show Yourself - The clarity of this gifset catches the viewers attention and honestly blows me away every time I look at it. You can see every distinct sparkle and movement in this complex animation, and Elsa shines brightly against the dark blue and black background. I don’t know how Kat was able to capture the shimmer and glow of this scene in an almost palpable way, but this is one of the many instances where their gifsets feel like immersive experiences. The depth and clarity they are able to add truly brings each scene to life.
Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse - This gifset wows in the color department, as Kat chose striking blues, pinks, and yellows and stacked them in a fun and eye-catching way. The more you look at this set, the more there is to admire, as Kat selected the best scenes from the original media to put on display. The sprinkling of pink in each gif adds a unifying touch, and the yellow gif at the end adds a sense of boldness, adventure, and bravery that captures the tone of the work.
