April 2024
"Are you gonna watch the livestream with us later?" Sunoo asked as he saw Jungwon enter the dorm with his bag over his shoulder, like always.
"Yes, of course," he answered right away, a big smile on his face. He was excited for the girls, his dearest friends, living the dream they all shared.
And COACHELLA was indeed one of the goals all of them had on their bucket list. He could only dream to perform there one day as well.
"Wash up first, Jungwonah. I will go after you," Jay yelled from the kitchen while he was attempting yet another "special - 3 hour - recipe" he had always wanted to try. Epicenter's special day was probably the best excuse for that, to make things even more special.
Nobody was complaining though, his food was surprisingly good, especially when he put so much time into it.
"Thank you!" Enhypen's leader was full of energy, which wasn't unusual at all, even when it was hard to understand with all the schedules they had going on. But that was just Jungwon, how he's always been.
He walked over to the bathroom, right past the hallway where their manager, Yuki, was standing, on the phone with someone.
He briefly nodded in Jungwon's direction with a smile on his face, greeting him, and Jungwon did the same before he slipped into the bathroom to take a quick shower.
It wasn't long until he was already drying his hair with a towel, that would be enough. Jungwon didn't like wasting his time on drying his hair with a hairdryer, so he would soon be ready to leave the bathroom again, if it wasn't for him overhearing Manager Yuki's call. The walls in Enhypen's dorm were quite thin.
"I mean, I am happy for her, she deserves that relationship. She's always been working so hard."
That's when the young singer's ears perked up. Relationship?
He couldn't help but think back to the conversation him and his friends had had in the van a few days ago. The one about this Juyeon-person and Mimi.
Mimi wasn't the type of person to lie to him. Jungwon couldn't even wrap his head around just the idea of that.
After all, he had never lied to her, or kept a secret from her and he was certain they were on the same page when it came to that. Him and all of his close friends, his second family, or so he thought.
He couldn't help himself but continue to eavesdrop.
"No, I don't know a lot about this guy either, Hyung. She's old enough to know— yes, but you know who we are talking about, like, we aren't talking about Semi for example, you get me? It will be fine. Yes, of course it's different because it's the first time for her, but I'm not that worried."
As much as the Korean boy was trying to find explanations, logical explanations, there were just too many "coincidences", too many descriptions that aligned too well with his best friend of seven years.
He only noticed then that he had been frowning and slightly tilting his head the whole time.
And now that he finally snapped out of it, he shook his head once, as if trying to shake away those concerns.
He could simply ask Mimi about it, after all.
But then again, he had asked her about it only a few days ago.
Jungwon didn't want to spiral, so he stopped, at least for now.
He went back to drying his hair for a bit before he finally left the bathroom and made his way into his room to put his stuff away.
He wasn't someone who was too consumed by overthinking, but right now, looking at the picture he kept so close to him — always right there on his nightstand — didn't really help.
Luckily, someone else was quick to pull him out of his head.
"Jungwonah! Get down here, we're gonna call the girls to wish them good luck." Jay's loud voice echoed through the entire dorm with ease, causing him to quickly drop his bag onto his bed before he walked back into the living room with quick steps.
By now, the others had joined Sunoo in the living room, except for Jay who was still cooking, but even he paused his activity for a moment to get his phone.
Without hesitation, he called Hyemin, who was most likely to pick up her phone — and she did.
She was already holding the phone up in the air, as the others were standing behind her, all still huddled inside the backstage area. They hadn't even had a soundcheck yet.
"There you are!" Jay put down his phone onto the living room table, leaning it against a bottle that was used as a phone stand, before squeezing himself into the frame.
The others were either sitting on the floor or on the couch and Jungwon and he were standing behind the sofa now, leaning over and looking into the camera with bright, supportive smiles on their faces.
"A bit bold for a stage outfit, but I am sure the audience will take it!" Jake commented with a teasing grin on his face, making both the other guys and the girls laugh.
"We haven't even started getting ready, Oppa!" Yue complained, but small, harmless jokes like that truly helped loosen the nerves for the idols. The members of Epicenter surely grew more nervous the more time passed and their friends could feel it through the screen.
Jungwon's eyes naturally shifted toward Mimi, who was standing far at the back as well, just like himself.
She was smiling and waving into the camera, almost as if she was right in front of them instead of thousands of miles away.
"Good luck for the performance!" Jungwon cheered, raising his fist into the air in a supportive manner, and the other boys copied his move right away.
The call didn't last that long, even though basically everyone was speaking.
But the girls still had things to prepare and they were a bit too nervous to speak now, at least that was the vibe they were giving off.
So after a few minutes, everyone in the lower part of Enhypen's dorm was pretty much back to their own activities.
"The performance will start in, like, three hours. I'm gonna rest till then," Jungwon decided before he headed back to his room and lay down.
He was suddenly truly feeling tired, that was very common — all his energy leaving him at once without warning.
And he would've drifted off too, if it wasn't for his phone suddenly ringing.
'미미누나'.
Once again, the boy raised an eyebrow before he could think, but he also picked up the phone that way — right away.
"Yes?" he answered, phone pressed to his ear.
"I'm nervous," Mimi said without greeting him, without hesitation, making him chuckle lightly, some weight falling off his chest.
Despite being nervous, she sounded like herself.
Her voice was quiet but steady and she sounded like she was standing outside.
"You know as soon as you get on that stage, you will forget about that."
He turned around, now lying on his stomach, his phone still pressed to his ear. He didn't know his Noona to be someone who struggled a lot with stage fright, at least not openly, but of course, this was entirely different.
Not that Mimi usually cared less about performances, but this audience was different from the fans that usually specifically came just for them. Now, they were about to perform in front of a whole audience that had probably never heard of Epicenter. Or, perhaps, even K-pop before.
For a brief moment, Jungwon caught himself thinking back to the situation earlier, the conversation he had overheard. He knew now wasn't the time to ask and he focused on thinking about ways to cheer her up a little.
She had cheered him up so many times when he had been nervous because of a performance.
"Just have fun, Noona. You know how to have fun."
"You're right," Mimi said, taking a deep breath again. She knew Jungwon was trying his best. He wasn't someone who was big on long speeches, but she appreciated him for being there for her.
Even when he always picked up his phone when she called, she was still grateful for it every single time.
He probably had other things to do, she thought.
And Jungwon felt a bit helpless, because he didn't know what else to say anymore.
"Thank you for picking up, Jungwonah. Enjoy the show later, yeah? But don't screen record any mistakes!"
