Plenary: Mentors’ Takeover

This plenary was very enjoyable for me because, not only was it very comedic, but is also allowed us students to interact with the actors and each other throughout the session. The way in which the mentors portrayed the current political candidates proved to be a great integration of how the issues that we have learned about in class correlate with the issues occurring in the real world. 

One important part of this plenary for me was the way in which the mentors handled the term ‘micro-aggression’. As women of different races and sexual identities, it was very interesting to hear everyone’s response on the different micro-aggressions that they hear and see regarding their lives on a daily basis. Furthermore, it forced us girls to tell stories that added a very unique feature to this plenary. 

Also, I loved the way that the mentors asked the audience questions rather than the audience posing the questions towards the speakers. The diverse responses for the girls in the audience made me more openminded towards to various struggles that us women go through and also taught me how to be more aware of what things can happen to women. 

i thoroughly enjoyed this plenary. I can say that we definitely ended the semester with a bang!

Women should be Unapologetic

We need more women in the world with the confidence to demand what they feel they deserve. This is important because if women do not fight for what they believe then no one will. Therefore, in despite of the wage gap, I feel that if the government won’t do anything about it, more women should stand up and fight fr it.

Vagina Monologues

I thoroughly enjoyed the Vagina Monologues, from beginning to end. To be able to see a group of empowered women talk about their frustrations and their experiences made me feel really happy because I now realize that I am not the only one that goes through these occurrences. 

My favorite performance was entitled, “The Woman Who loved to make Vaginas Happy.” It described a lawyer who would intimidate her male partners during sex due to the volume of her moaning. She decided to switch to having sex with women and proceeded to teach the various types of moaning that women possess, but have to control in order to satisfy the requests of their male partners. I not only enjoyed this piece due to the actress, but I also loved it because it said to me “Khes, don’t ever let a man stop you from being as loud as you can!” Not only during sex, but in all other aspects of my life. 

I was also pleasantly surprised at the number of males in the audience. Although I cannot say what was going on in their heads, I feel as though it was important that males hear what women have to say in order for them to have some type of understanding about how we feel. 

The Vagina Monologues was definitely a success. I am so excited for next year’s performances.

Plenary: Women in Engineering

At first, I was not very excited for this plenary because I have absolutely no interest in anything concerning engineering. I was a little more open to our speaker after my teacher acknowledged that she had done a lot of work repairing New Jersey after Hurricane Sandy. However, although I was very uninterested in this week’s plenary, I must say that Bobbie Ridgely was an excellent speaker and did not bore me at all.

One thing that I loved about her speaking was the many mottos that she uses to guide her life. At the beginning of her speech she said, “Don’t ever change in ways that make you less human.” I particularly liked this quote because she basically said do what you want. You are going to make mistakes along the way because you are human and prone to mess up. She went on to talk about “Change, Growth and Evolution”. As humans, we are not fixed beings, we change our decisions every day. By learning from our experiences, we change, grow and evolve into new, better individuals. 

Furthermore, she mentioned her work with “A Future with Hope”, her non profit organization that works to repair the overall lives of vulnerable populations such as the elderly and poor. Although my passion is not with non profit work, I admire her perseverance to make her organization successful and effective. 

Throughout her speech, I loved the way they she encouraged us to do what makes us happy, “define for [yourselves] what it means to be a good person” and to “know what [you] know and feel confident in what [you] know”. By incorporating these words of wisdoms while explaining her career as an engineer, Bobbie blew me away with what she said.
