Chapter 19
Shuri awoke as the sun's rays showed through the windows of the balcony. Any other morning she would want to run from them. Or better yet, not see them until her day's work was done. This morning though, they assisted in highlighting Riri's profile. Her face lay on Shuri's chest as she slowly snored. They had fallen asleep a few hours ago, but Shuri's body didn't seem to get the memo. Her current predicament causing her anxiety,Shuri stilled as Riri started to move in her sleep. Once she was sure Riri was asleep, her mind was pulled back to her problems. her life, Riri's life was on the line. The safety and livelihood of their people as well. "Their" Shuri was caught off guard by the word. She couldn't deny that Riri had become entangled in her life, but now she was becoming a part of her world as well. Shuri knew how the public could react and the mixture of reactions she'd receive. At times it seemed as if the world was against them. The idea of what could be plagued her mind.
Carefully, she slid from underneath Riri, trying to move so as not to awaken her. Pulling a thin sheet around her still naked body, Shuri drowsily made her way to the bathroom. She allowed herself to fully awaken, as she stretched her aching body. Resting her arms on the cold countertop, thoughts of last night began to fill her mind. As if it were a broken record on repeat, Shuri could feel every memory from last night. Shuri shook her head, as she tried to escape her mind. With the situation that lay ahead she begrudgingly started her day. Making her way to the large open shower, Shuri turned the bronze handles until she felt the warmth of the water start to flow over her body. For a moment she allowed herself to relax under the stream. Allowing all tension to release from her body. After another few minutes she decided to wash up and begin the long day ahead of her.
Stepping out of the shower, steam began to fill the room. After she grabbed her towel off of the nearby rack, she used part of it to wipe off the clouded mirror. Looking in the bathroom mirror, she was further reminded of last night's events. Hickeys peppered her skin. She ran her hand along them, as she tried to push the thoughts from her mind and progress through the rest of her day. She had to admit, a woman named Riri Williams had her heart, mind and soul. in a chokehold.
After she finished the rest of her morning routine, Shuri exited the bathroom only to see Riri sitting up, on her phone. Her hair was still a mess from the night before, a contrast from her usual nearly perfect braids. Riri glanced up from her phone. Tired eyes met Shuri's bright ones,
" Good morning babe."
"Good morning, love. You sleep okay?" Shuri asked as she approached the bed,
"Mmm, yes. Perfect actually." Riri responded as she leaned into a kiss.
Shuri met her halfway, her lips sinking into hers as she allowed her body to fall onto the bed.
Sensing they might have a repeat of last night, Shuri reluctantly pulled her body from Riri's.
"As much as I want to continue, we've kind of got a big day or few days ahead of us."
"You're right. Ugh, can we go six months without one of us becoming a Criminal Minds episode?"
"Why are you watching a criminal's mind?" Shuri asked, confused.
"No, babe, it's- I'll- I'll show you later." Riri laughed as she got up out of the bed.
Shuri shook her head and chuckled, confused but amused, "Okay, well, I'll be waiting down in the lab. Ayo and Aneka will be meeting us down there. Along with a few trusted others." Getting up she made her way over to Riri's side of the bed. Her slender frame towering over Riri's.
"I'll be over there in a few. There's still a few things I need to get together for the meeting later this morning." Riri said as she looked up at Shuri, getting lost in the glory that lied beneath the
standing woman's eyes.
After one final but brief kiss, Shuri finally began to make her way out the door. Hearing the sliding of the doors, Riri reluctantly got out of the bed. Knowing what was ahead of them the next few days was her only source of motivation to remove herself from the warmth she was nestled in. Her bare feet met the coolness of the floor as she grabbed her robe that was hanging on the back of their bedroom door. Crossing the room, she made her way over to the bathroom, where she almost rushed to get ready and dressed. Looking into the mirror one final time, something caught her eye. It wasn't a scar or a pimple, no. It was her aura. As she looked into the reflection before her, for the first time in a long time she saw a light. A sparkle. Hope. Before she could comprehend what was happening, tears began to fall down her face. As she took the moment to reflect, Riri finally understood the source of her tears. For the longest time, she had prepared for enemies to fight to avenge her parents' deaths. And for so long, she had not felt she had anyone to make a difference for. A sense of pride began to fill her as well as hope. She was finally giving in to the family she had found. And these next few days were a testament to protecting and proving just that.
Exiting the bathroom after gathering herself, Riri made her way out of the bedroom and into the den. On the vibranium and wooden fused coffee table, were a mixture of papers and other files she had laid out in the early hours of the morning. Collecting everything she needed, she placed them into her bag. After double checking that she had everything, she slung her bag over her right shoulder and proceeded out the door.
*************************
Down in the lab, a nervous buzz could be felt. Like a hum in the air. Aneka and Ayo stood as the only warriors in the lab, besides the two guards who stood outside the door. Both warriors stood wearing their natural stoic expressions, as they stood waiting for the final member of the party to enter, Riri. They had taken the time to make note of Shuri’s…markings. As well as tease the latter. A few other of Shuri’s scientists were in the lab as well. If they were here, Shuri trusted them with her life. Shuri was standing in front of one of the many screens, a different image appearing and disappearing almost as soon as they appeared. She was so immersed in her current task, that she hadn't heard the familiar footsteps that had entered the lab. Riri stopped at the top of the stairs and looked down at the leader who was carrying the world on her back. Trying no to get lost in the moment, she descended the stairs, knowing each step was a closer step to solving the turmoil that lay ahead.
"Shuri?" Aneka offered, trying to signal Riri's arrival.
Shuri offered no response.
“Shuri?" She let out a low hum this time in response.
"Riri's arrived." Her head snapped around instantly.
"Ahem," Shuri attempted as she cleared her throat and gather her thoughts.
"Hey, we all ready to start? Sorry I was so late, I had to get a few things."
"No worries, Ri. I was still going over a few things myself." Shuri tried her hardest not to stare or hesitate, but the young woman before her always had a way of capturing her in the moment.
"So?” Riri allowed the last syllable to be drawn out, eluding to Shuri to start.
"Well-" Shuri attempted to finish but was cut off by the sound of her lab doors opening.
"Well, I do hope you were not going to leave me out of this. Also, I bought a friend. I hope you don't mind." M'baku's deep voice perforated the emptiness the large lab provided.
Everyone looked to the entrance, where M'baku stood in his large stature. The small group shared looks of concern and confusion. Before any questions could be asked, a much smaller woman popped out from behind him.
"And seeing as you need intel, I thought I might come along. Besides M'baku wouldn't stop practically begging me over the phone." The voice belonged to none other than Nakia.
"NAKIA!" Shuri shouted, any form of formality dropped from her body as she rushed over to engulf her sister-in-law.
"Nice to know I am missed." Nakia responded from her trapped position. Not long after, Ayo and Aneka were joining the now group hug as well.
After a few short moments the group dispersed. Riri was still standing at the end of the table that sat in the middle of Shuri's Lab. Watching the group had caused her to tear up. She knew the stress that Shuri went through daily and how lonely she felt. This short visit from Nakia would hopefully offer her some form of familiarity. Riri knew Shuri would never show it, but her pain was something she shared. One she knew all too well and one she hoped would be eased by this visit. Riri was pulled from her thoughts as she felt someone approach her. Suddenly she was being pulled into the arms of a slightly taller Nakia.
"Don't be a stranger. You're practically family now." Nakia said before releasing the smaller woman, who was currently in a slight of shock and a little fear at the woman's words.
"I know everything." She said with a wink before turning around to face the rest of the group.
"So, what did I sacrifice my piece of paradise for?" Nakia said staring at the group before her.
"And we appreciate your sacrifice." Shuri said snarkingly before finishing, "Griot! Pull up the plans."
"Right away, Shuri." The bodiless voice responded.
A few short moments later, a holographic blueprint of the citadel was illuminating from the table, as well as several other documents were floating slightly above the table.
Shuri placed her hands firmly on the table . A hidden rage started to boil from the pit of her stomach. Taking a moment to take a breath, she exhaled deeply before continuing.
"So, as some of you may know, the elders have placed a hit on me." Making eye contact with everyone in the small group, she could tell the concern they were trying to hide. "In response, M'baku and I have come up with a plan to stop that."
"Why would the elders want to kill you, Shuri?" Nakia was visibly concerned, letting her emotional walls fall.
"M'baku? Care to explain?" Shuri said, looking at M'baku who was cleaning his nails.
"Hm? Oh, right, right. In basic terms, since Shuri has no one to take the throne and has created a synthetic herb, they are wanting to get her out of the way. To place someone more, ehhhh, fitting, on the throne. I mean, I can not blame them, look at me. But I am NO ONE's puppet. M'baku does not get controlled. I" He said beating on his chest "Do the controlling."
“Bast! Do you have to be so- barbaric" Nakia cut in, turning to him as she was standing next to him.
"Barbaric?!? the temperature of your breath is barbaric." M'baku shot back.
"See, and this is why I can't work with him!" Nakia responded, looking at the rest of the group with wide eyes, pointing at M'baku.
"Work with mee? Bleh, woman, you are-" M'baku started again but was cut off.
"ENOUGH!" Shuri's voice sounded throughout the room. Her voice cut through whatever tensions were trying to arise in the room.
Startled eyes met her serious ones. The silence in the room was deafening as all attention was turned back to the problem at hand.
"Now, if you two are done acting like children, can we proceed?" Receiving silence as confirmation, Shuri continued on with her debriefing.
"The plan starts with gaining some intel. Riri, that's where you come in. Like we discussed earlier, I need a small device or uhm several actually. Something that is unnoticeable and can be controlled from long ranges, but also able to record video and audio evidence of whatever they're planning.I’m sure some of my workers would be more than glad to assist you." Shuri paused as she looked at the other scientists in the room and then to Riri.
Riri gave Shuri a slight nod. Nothing had to be said, as the two women trusted each other enough to know both of them would get their jobs done.
"Those devices will be placed, in their living quarters, as well as the council room. The hardest part would be getting them into place. I think I may have that solved though. Ayo, do you think you could perform some "security checks" on the elders quarters?"
"Yes, of course. I'll make it look like a random security detail. After this meeting I will inform the rest of the Dora Milaje." Ayo gave a quick nod of confirmation.
"Thank you. While we will need extra security detail on the day of M'baku's coronation, we will also need a small team of foot soldiers basically. Whoever you feel comfortable with, I'll need a few extra hands. Which leads me to the next part of the plan." Shuri took a deep breath before she continued. " In order to expose them fully we will need to take control of every screen, radio, and other broadcasting source we can use. We'll play the audio and visuals we receive. I fully expect them to put up a fight. So we have to be prepared for anything."
"And what of the assassin? Who's going to handle him?" Aneka asked.
Shuri turned to face her and her eyes squinted as if she was focused on a long thought out task. "I will handle him. Myself. Once we gather all the intel we need, whoever it is will answer to me." Shuri all but spat out.
She took a deep breath before gathering herself and continuing, "Now, we have a lot of work to do. Before we go, I would like to thank everyone for this." Shuri said, almost getting teary eyed.
"Agh, no time for feelings, little panther. We have work to do. I swear females." M'baku grunted out. His slick comment earned him a slap to the back of the head from Nakia and several disapproving looks.
"Oww. And you all are going to sit here and let her abuse me like that?" M'baku said as he faked being hurt.
"Yeap. That's what you get for mocking my girl." Riri said from her position next to Shuri, who wore an amusing smirk.
Aneka and Ayo looked on at the group, amused by the usual bantering and antics.
"Should we let them continue to fight or start trying to wrap this up?" Aneka offered it to her superior.
"No, let them get it out, just a little longer. I've missed this."Ayo said as she chuckled.
"Hmm, I'd have to agree. You're right when you're right, love."
"YOU AND YOUR PACK OF BRUTES COULDN"T EVEN-" Nakia's voice cut through the room as the warrior couple turned their attention to the source. Her voice had moved through the hallowed space with a force edging on anger.
"Annnnnd I think it's time we intervene?" Aneka questioned, worried.
"Yea. Yea, fun's over." Ayo said as she stepped forward towards the bickering group.
"Okay! Enough!" Ayo said, not yelled, but asserted as she attempted to gain control of her friends. "I think we all have work to do as Shuri stated." She paused as she made eye contact with everyone in the room. Aneka knew that look and prayed the group would listen. Behind her love's eyes she saw the rage they were holding back, like a gate waiting and ready to be broken.
Aneka looked to M'baku, who looked to Nakia, who looked to Shuri, who looked to Riri, who looked down and started to play with her hands. "Don't look at me." She said as she threw her hands up. "You heard the woman, we got work to do." She said as she made her way to grab her materials from her lab. Knowing she would probably be spending the day in Shuri's lab, she proceeded to set up. She made quick eye contact with the few scientists that were there as they had began to disperse to complete their tasks as well. While Riri had never been one to work in a group, this felt different.
"Best I get going as well. I have…things to do." M'baku said as he threw Ayo one last daunting glance and all but stormed out the room, making sure to stomp up the stairs on his way out.
Ayo rolled her eyes at M'baku's antics. "Such a toddler. Shuri, if you will excuse us." Ayo said as she and Aneka crossed their arms over their chest before leaving the lab. Their red suits ascended the stairs like a flash of greatness and power as they exited the door.
Nakia lingered behind. She had decided before she had left Haiti, there was more to this trip than just this assignment. Approaching Shuri, who was talking attentively with Riri and going over plans, she hoped to steal the young leader away for a moment. "Shuri? Could I steal you away for a moment?" She asked with hopeful eyes.
Shuri's head popped up as she turned to face Nakia, pulling her away from the plans she was going over with Riri. "Excuse me, babe. I'll be right back." Shuri said to Riri.
"Take your time." Riri lowly said, as she was sharply focused on the documents before her.
With that, Shuri turned to a waiting Nakia.
"I'll be blunt," Nakia started as she began to make her way to the stairs. "I didn't want to come, but once M'baku explained everything, I knew I had no choice. If you have time later, I'd like to take a walk in the garden, and talk. If that's okay? Just to catch up and enjoy a moment from all of this."
"Of course, I should be free after noon. And Kia, I'm glad you decided to come. I expect you'll be leaving soon after?"
"And that's what I wanted to talk to you about." Nakia stopped at the top of the stairs and turned her attention to Shuri, as she became more serious. Clasping her hands together she took a deep breath, "I want to stay for a short while after all of this. And eventually, soon, bring your nephew here." Nakia let Shuri digest the last words she had said to Shuri, who was becoming emotional. Although she tried to hide them behind her stoic nature, Nakia could easily see past that.
"Of course, I'm sure we can discuss the logistics later." Shuri tried to contain the mix of joy and nervousness that was coursing through her at the moment.
"Okay then, I, uh, I guess I'll leave you. I have a few things to handle before this afternoon."
With that , Nakia nodded and turned to leave the lab.
Shuri watched her leave the lab before she made her way back down the stairs to figure out the rest of the plans with Riri.
"Hey, is everything okay?" Shuri was met with concerning eyes as she made her way to the bottom of the stairs.
"Yes, love. Everything is fine. Nakia just wants to meet later."
Riri accepted the answer for now, but knowing Shuri there was more to the story. She knew in time she would tell her, but that time was not now. They had a greater task at hand. One that required both their full attention and efforts.
"So. where are we with everything." Shuri said, trying to change the topic.
"Well, I was thinking of making something spherical, small. Almost like an- eye ball?" Riri, said as she scrunched her face thinking of the comparison she just used. "Anyways, it'll have a singular camera and can be controlled remotely. All the hardware will be compacted into the inner dome of the device. It's a long shot, but it'll work. They're simple and can be easily placed wherever we need them. I was thinking we could even navigate them through the vent systems. Thoughts?" Riri finished, finally taking a breath. Only to be met with an almost blank stare from her girlfriend.
"I was only talking to Nakia for like, 30 seconds?!"
Riri's confusion turned to humor as she let out a laugh, "Well, I've been thinking about this since you said something. If you just gotta know."
Shuri walking up behind Riri, wrapped her arms around the smaller woman, leaning down to whisper into her ear, "Let's get to then."
The rest of the morning and until after lunch were filled with the two drafting ideas and making prototypes. Knowing they both needed a break from the lab, Shuri had suggested they take a break. She stilled needed to meet with nakia and Riri could use a nap.
"Hey, I'm about to head back to our place. Is there anything you need before I go?"
"No, love. I'll see you at home."
And with those words, a part of Riri set fire like the embers of fresh fire. Until now, she didn't know she needed to hear those words.
As she approached Shuri, the feeling grew. Leaning up she gave her one last kiss before leaving. "I'll see you at home babe." She said, her hands still on the slightly taller woman's chest.
All she got in return was a dazed looking Shuri and a simple nod.
Riri let out a slight chuckle as she turned on her heels and finally ascended the stairs, leabing out of the sliding doors.
Shuri sighed as she watched Riri leave. She was hoping that sthis meeting with Nakia didn't take too long. While she missed the latter, she wouldnt have minded a calm evening in with Ri.
As she finished cleaning up the few papers that were left, she thought about what else Nakia could want to talk about. Either way, she quickly finished in the lab, said a quick goodbye to GRIOT and made her way outside. As she started to ascend down the mountain, the cool evening air felt refreshing. Almost as it breathed a new sense of calmness into her. The weight of her situation had not been felt until now. Holding onto this stress for so long had numbed her in a way. Pausing for a moment. she took in everything her country had to offer. Looking over at the horizon, the sight of the sun setting provided an incomparable sight. The only thing that matched it's beauty was Riri. But maybe she was a little biased. Among all things though, Shuri was only propelled more in her fight to protect her people and those she loved. The sight before her made her swell with pride. Taking one last look, she exhaled and began her journey to her and Nakia's meeting spot. A spot she knew was chosen with intention. Turning she began to make her way down the mountain and into the main parts of the capital.
Once she arrived at the cities edge, she opted going through the crowds and stayed on the outer parts of the city's perimeter. Passing several people, many shocked, others offering her gifts, she did her best to move through the commotion with haste. Now, she would have really appreciated her guards. Eventualy she made her way through the thickened crowds of the business district, she passed the parks that sat on the cities outer edges, until she could see several docks in the distance. Breaking away from the main path she was on, her feet didn't struggle to climb the man made path that broke through thickened and hanging greenery. Making her way through more bushes and forestry, Shuri came upon a clearing. Ahead of her lay the remnance of an old garden. Several busted pots scattered the ground, overgrown plants crawled into every crevice of the earth, and on the other side of the ruined garden, was a pair of benches. Both had been weathered and cracked over the years. On one of them sat the person she came to meet.
Nakia's small frame sat on the bench, as if she knew the exact moment that Shuri had arrived. She watched as Shuri made her way over to where she was sitting, a small smile played out on the latter's face.
"Funny, you picked this spot." Shuri called out to Nakia.
"Well, we haven't been here since we were younger. I thought it was appropriate. Besides, the last time we were here you were crying because your mouth was on fire." Nakia stood up, pulling Shuri into a hug. The warm embrace was a change from the work filled day they both had.
"Hey, T'challa dared me to eat that pepper. How could I back down?" Shuri responded as she pulled away from the hug and they both sat down on the bench.
A heavy silence filled the air as both women looked at the remnants of their childhood.
"I miss him more and more everyday, Kia." Shuri said as she looked down and began to play with her hands. She tried her hardest to hold back the tears that were forming in the wells of her eyes, but that proved impossible as she let them fall.
Nakia didn't notice the tears that fell from her eyes until they dropped onto her black pants leg, "I miss him everyday. And everytime I look at Toussiant, I see him." Wiping her tears, she turned to Shuri. Grabbing her hand, she looked into her eyes, "He would be so proud of you, Shuri." As Shuri tried to hide the pain she felt, Nakia refused. Taking her free hand, she caressed the side of Shuri's face in an attempt at offering comfort and pulled her face to look back at hers.
"Shuri, you carry the world on your shoulders. Make sure you don't forget those around you who will help you to carry that weight."
"I do. I have people."
Nakia looked back at her with challenging eyes. "Shuri, Riri doesn't count."
Shuri rolled her eyes in disapproval.
"Don't worry.I approve of her. And I know T'challa would have too. She's brilliiant and the way you two look at each other. It reminds me of the way he used to look at me." Nakia finished as she dropped her head.
This time it was Shuri who embraced the other woman. After a while they broke the embrace. A comfortable silence held them then as they watched the sunset.

Chapter 3
“Jaded love”
A still groggy Riri turned over in her bed to only find emptiness. She continued to feel for a warmth she knew wasn't there. Rather out of instinct or hope, she couldn't determine. Every morning had been the same as the one before recently. Her only company being the silk sheets she was currently wrapped in. Curling back into herself, Riri sat with herself. The coldness of the morning seeped into her covers. There were not enough blankets though to feel the void of her missing lover. Obligations to her people kept her in her lab as of late.
Rolling over, Riri begrudgingly got out of bed. Her own duties, calling her out of the bed and to face the day. She walked across the bare floor, feet meeting the coolness of the wooden floors. As the silence of the room played like an old melody. One she wanted to forget, but was played in every corner of the room. Dragging herself through her morning routine, Riri eventually was ready to start her day. On her way out the door, she noticed Shuri had left her workbag.
"Forgetful. As always." Grabbing the bag, she made a note to stop by the lab on her way to her first meeting of the day. Riri headed out the door of their shared quarters, starting her day without her person. Something she had not and did not want to get used to.
After a brief walk she came upon the lab As she got closer her ears were met with the sound of laughter. Almost instantly she recognized the source. Shuri. But she wasn't alone. Someone unfamiliar. A woman. A beautiful woman was laughing with her girlfriend. her hand playfully swatting at Shuri's shoulder.
"Ahem" Riri said standing in the doorway. Her hand sitting promptly on her hip, and anger ridden on her face.
"Oh, good morning ,babe." Shuri said, oblivious to her girlfriend's building anger.
"Mm, Good morning. babe." Riri responded, a dangerous tone in her voice. " I was just stopping by because you left your work bag."
"Oh, I didn't even notice. This morning has just been so busy. Oh, Uh, Liyema this is my girlfriend Shuri." Shuri said as she began to walk over to where Riri was still standing. Shuri was surprised, as she leaned in for a kiss only to be met with Riri's cheek.
"Everything okay, babe?" Shuri asked lowly, but feeling as if she already knew the answer.
"Of course, I'll see you at home." And with that Riri turned on her heels and began to march out of the lab. Garnering looks of attention as she left. Nothing had to be said or heard, the energy was felt. And the owners of those looks made a point to stay out of her way. It had almost become custom for the couple's peers and anyone in proximity of them to stay out of the way of either person during one of their arguments. Among those lookers was Aneka, who unlike many others was not scared of either woman. Riri avoided her look as she did the others, but that did not stop Aneka from approaching her.
"So, what is it this time?" The warrior asked.
"What are you even talking about, Aneka?"
"Hm, if you had to lie for your life, we'd be planning your funeral right now." Aneka said, biting back her laughter, eliciting a glare from Riri.
Riri sighed in defeat as she rolled her eyes, " I don't even know. it's just this bitch Liyema or who the hell ever had her hands all over Shuri. Do you know the last time I had my hands all over her? Or even woke up next to her? I sure as hell don't. And between that and her always being at work, I just- it's too much. And knowing that someone else has more access to my girlfriend than I do...that really just pushed me over the edge." Riri ran her hands down her braids and exhaled heavily. Being able to vent was refreshing for once.
Aneka watched the woman in front of her. Usually she would laugh at Riri's rants, but she could tell she was really struggling with this.
"Have you told her any of this? Besides just now of course."
"No, I haven't had the time. We're usually too busy. Maybe if I was a blueprint or a project, she'd spend some time with me." Riri responded, tears threatening to spill from the corners of her eyes. Not from sadness, but frustration.
"I'm not sure if there is a right or wrong answer in this situation. I do know that as much as you two put your people first, you often forget about yourselves. Relationships included. You're supposed to navigate the waters of life together. When the ship gets off course, talk to your co-captain. Communication is key, Riri. I know you two will figure it out. Now, I have some training to do so we can continue this conversation later." Aneka said.
"I can't say you're wrong. Thanks, Aneka."
"Anytime, Riiri." Aneka said as she began to walk in the opposite direction. Pausing and turning around a smile began to form on her face, "Oh, and Riri? If that had been me, not even the Black Panther would have been able to get me off of her." Aneka added as she winked and walked away.
"Riri laughed as she continued on her walk back to her first meeting.
As she entered the conference room, any distractions and thoughts of her current problems began to fade away from her mind. All of her work day was dedicated to the project and team she had been a part of. The day seemed to fly by as she went from meeting to meeting with little to no breaks. Only stopping briefly at lunch to eat. And that was only because she received a short break in between her sessions. Her current developmental project had been keeping her busy. Once her last meeting ended, she made her way back to her room. Walking out of the conference room though, seemed to bring her issues back to the forefront of her mind. Shuri would usually surprise her at some point on her walk back home, but as of late that hadn't been the case.
Inside her room, Riri waited for Shuri to come home. Pacing the room, she began to think about the impending conversation. Shuri was the love of her life. She knew that. And she didn't question Shuri's loyalty. Shuri would never cheat on her, she would never step outside of their relationship. But recently, there has not been much of a relationship. Riri understood the responsibilities that came with protecting their people. As much as Riri tried to shake the insecure thoughts that were creeping up, they demanded to linger in her mind. Reserving a place in the depths of her mind. Riri stopped pacing the floor and sat on the edge of their bed. Head in her hands, tears fell from her broken eyes. Sadness, frustration, anger. Every emotion released itself into the streams falling down her face. As her sobs turned into a soft cry, she heard the door open,
Shuri was home.
"Babe? BABEE?!" Shuri yelled out as she entered the door.
Riri sat on the bed, her nerves gluing her to the spot she was in.
"Babe?" Shuri's figured appeared in the doorway. Her eyes fell upon the site before her. Shuri's heart almost broke at the sight of her girlfriend. Shuri immediately went to the bedside, kneeling in front of Shuri. She took her hands into her own. Her strong hands cradling Riri's gentle ones.
"Babe, what's wrong?"
Shuri was met with silence as she tried to get Riri to look into her eyes. Pulling her chin towards her, she finally met the eyes she had been longing to see. Yet, it wasn't the look she was hoping to see. Something broke inside Shuri, as she looked into tear filled eyes.
"Babygirl, talk to me. Please." Shuri said, her voice breaking from desperation.
"Shuri," Riri started, fighting through impending tears. Riri pulled her hands from Shuri's hold. "I-dammit, Shuri." Riri let out a deep breath as she moved from in front of Shuri to create distance. The thoughts of this morning replayed in her mind, adding more fuel to her current emotional state. "You this. With her."
"Who ar-"
"Oh, don't play dumb. We both know that's something you're not. I SAW you. Her hands were all over you. Just a ki-ki-ki."
"You mean Liyema."
"Li-who the hell ever. Liyema, limeka, library. I don't give a damn. The point is, I barely get to see you. When was the last time we had a date night? Hm? Because, I don't even get to wake up next to you? But some random broad gets all your attention?" Riri raised her clasped and trembling hands to her mouth as she exhaled. As she attempted to calm and soothe the anger that was residing in her, tears she fought to hold back started to fall. The woman she loved was slowly slipping away. And Shuri didn't see it. How could she not see it? Riri thought.
Shuri stood with caution as she consumed what Riri had said.
"I never meant to neglect you or to make you feel like you were never a priority. And I swear to the Gods that I would never put another woman before you or even think about cheating." Shuri approached Riri, not understanding how she could have put Riri in this position.
"Riri, no other woman holds a candle to the light you have brought into my life. You are my source of strength, my rock. I look at you and I'm instantly grounded. You bring me back to earth and I somehow pull me into your orbit. I couldn't love anyone else if my life depended on it. I would rather be lying cold in a grave before being with someone else." Shuri stood in front of Riri. She pulled Riri's hands from in front of her face, and with the other hand she pulled Riri's face upwards. Their glossy eyes meeting for the first time after what seemed like an eternity.
"Baby, I'm not complete without you. I need you. You're my oxygen. My rainbow after the storm. Every part of me craves to be with you. If I have to leave everything behind or fight the entire universe to be with you. I will. I am yours. No one and I mean no one will ever get any part of me. Not in the way you do. I'm reserved for you. In this lifetime and the next. My mind, body and soul, they belong to you. And I'm sorry for not showing you that. But from this moment on, I'll change that."
Riri didn't notice the tears falling from her eyes. She was enamored with Shuri right now. The love she had once felt now radiating from her girlfriend and making its way into her heart. This was the Shuri she had fallen in love with. The one who never failed to make her feel seen and loved. The one who ran to her defense without any thoughts or questions. The one who made her feel at home.
"Shuri, I -" But her words were cut off by Shuri's lips meeting hers. Riri melted into Shuri's lips. Shuri deepend. Almost as if she was trying to reach Riri's soul and intertwin herself within it.
Time had stopped as the couple continued to fell weeks of tension and turmoil melt away and disappear as desire and love consumed them again.
Needing air, Riri eventually broke the kiss.
"I love you, but if I ever see anyone like that with you again, I'll show you why they call me Iron Heart." Riri bit her lips as she smiled from ear to ear, her insecurities fueled by envy long gone.
Shuri smiled, looking down at Riri's now glowing face.
"I love you, too"
