In April 2024, Joseph Shabason and Nicholas Krgovich set off on a two-week tour of Japan, their first time performing in the country as Shabason & Krgovich. In an act of well-coordinated serendipity, Koji Saito of 7e.p. records enlisted Saya and Ueno of Tenniscoats, the revered Japanese duo, to tour with and perform backing band duties throughout their stops in Matsumoto, Nagoya, Kobe, Kyoto, and Tokyo.
The four could only rehearse twice, but it was all they needed. Their connection was immediate and felt in the music; their shows fluid, elastic, and just the right amount of unpredictable. Saito had anticipated this simpatico and arranged for recording engineers to meet them in Kobe, where they had a two-day stay at the famed Guggenheim House, a 117-year-old colonial-style residence that had been converted into an artist residency.
Shabason, Krgovich, Tenniscoats are releasing the album Wao, out August 29th via Western Vinyl.
Following their unique yet stellar take on My Bloody Valentine's "Lose My Breath," on Monday 8/25 they release the latest single, "Departed Bird."

And now they release their enchanting cover of My Bloody Valentine's "Lose My Breath"
Krgovich provides some insight into how the cover came about: "Before the first show of our tour together Saya asked if I knew this My Bloody Valentine song and if I would join them and sing it as part of their set. Of course I was up for it but MBV is a bit of a blindspot for me. She was like "it's called Lose My Breath" and then as soon as the wordless oooh's happened I was like "oh! That one!!!"
"I had a cassette copy of Isn't Anything that I got at a thrift store while in high school and it was in my old Volvo as a teenager. I don't remember listening to that tape all that much but I remember loving that melody, and I still do. I'm glad we made a recording of it for the album as a souvenir of the serendipity and much like finally watching The Sopranos I need to put "listen to My Bloody Valentine" near the top of my to-do list."

Joseph Shabason, Nicholas Krgovich, and Tenniscoats (here as Shabason, Krgovich, Tenniscoats) are announcing their album Wao out August 29th via Western Vinyl, alongside the painterly first single “Our Detour.”
When Joseph and Nicholas toured Japan as a duo in 2024, they met for the first time when Saya and Ueno of Tenniscoats were enlisted to tour with and perform backing band duties.
The four could only rehearse twice ahead of time, but it was all they needed. Their connection was immediate and felt in the music; their shows fluid, elastic, and just the right amount of unpredictable. With no songs prepared, they began to play with melodies, improvising and pulling pieces from that spontaneity into wholes.
The album itself was ultimately recorded during a a two-day stay at the famed Guggenheim House, a 117-year-old colonial-style residence converted into an artist residency.
"Our Detour" is a look into the brightly hued magic that came together during these recording sessions.
