I can’t think of my childhood without thinking about Star Wars movies or the corner store across the street. I just used this corner store as a metaphor for what I wanted my music to be: stripped-down, basic, enough to get you by, but we got stuff you want. I feel like the candy and the soda and the stuff that’s not good for you are the things I like about jazz.
Kris Funn quoted in a review by Jackson Sinnenber in CapitalBop (2019). How Kris Funn found his sound in the ‘gateway jazz’ of the CornerStore
I don't imagine that I have very good taste in music, but I enjoy hearing music so much. So Funn's crack about what he loves about Jazz made me smile.
I was listening to CornerStore"s Thursday Night Prayer Meeting and wondering who the piano was. That's what led me to this artcle. It's Allyn Johnson. And the review got me to listening to some Kenny Garrett music. I listened to "Lonnie"s Lament" from Pursuance: The Music Of John Coltrane, an album I didn't know existed. Wow!
