On Thursday night, Mike Dillon kicked off a tour around the Midwest with a new band that he wouldn’t usually tour with as the Mike Dillon Band. On the road with him this time around is a rotating cast of characters like ex-Ween drummer Claude Coleman, Jr. on skins, JJ Jungle on bass, and Cliff Hines on guitar, with other dates getting Andre Cholmondeley or John Speice. Interesting choices, but we would expect nothing less from the shaved ape himself. Our friend Jamie Schroeder was there on opening night at The Blind Tiger in St. Louis and brought back this photo gallery. –Editor

New York, New Orleans, and Japanese Typhoons: Cliff and Sasha Land in Brooklyn with New Music

On Monday, November 18th @ 7pm, Cliff Hines and Sasha Masakowski will appear at the ShapeShifter Lab in Brooklyn. Their collaborative, featuring Cliff (guitar, voice), Sasha (voice, keyboards) and Max Moran (bass) and G Maxwell Zemanovic (drums), simply billed as billed as Cliff and Sasha, are on mission to draw attention to the “progressive side of New Orleans music that most people aren't familiar with.” I asked both Cliff and Sasha to discuss some of their thoughts on New York City, New Orleans and a recent joyous, turned unexpectedly turbulent tour to Japan.
“To me [NYC] is one of the most inspiring places in the world,” Sasha said. “The amount of creativity packed into such a small amount of space…every time I'm here I feel like I'm high on the NYC buzz -- so much great music, fashion, food, it's incredible. I can't get enough.” Cliff tours with various genre bending groups--a dash of psychedelic rock, a dash of jazz, a dash of blissful mayhem. On a recent hit with The Mike Dillon Band at the Brooklyn Bowl, Cliff and Dave Dreiwitz (Marco Benevento Trio, Ween) dug deep into the kind of record shopping smorgasbord that can only be executed in NYC.
Cliff and Sasha both attended NOCCA (New Orleans Center for Creative Arts) for their high school years and continued an UNO to “formally” study music. Their education and environment nurtured and cultivated their own voices, which would earn their own respective places in New Orleans Progressive Music. Cliff's last record, Wanderlust, features a brilliantly animated video for the single "Dresden" (see here) and Sasha and her band beautifully articulate the story behind her latest release, Wishes, in a video here.
Cliff is the first to admit, “New Orleans has an insane amount of creative musicians, and [Sasha and I] are both really proud to be part of an eclectic and vibrant arts scene.” Sasha digs deeper; “it's such a generous, appreciative scene, from audiences and other artists alike. I feel like most of the population of New Orleans is made up of die-hard music lovers, so there is a lot of support and respect for musicians within the community, which is beautiful thing.”
You can take the cats out of NOLA, but NOLA will follow. At the start of October, Cliff and Sasha embarked on a tour to Matsue, Japan, which is in fact a sister-city of New Orleans. Their performance was to celebrate the 20 year anniversary of our sister-city relationship, and in proper NOLA spirit, the entire city had had a “little Mardi Gras" parade with a second-line throughout the ancient Japanese village with a Japanese brass band playing “When The Saints.” “So much fun and so surreal,” Sasha recalls.
During Cliff and Sasha’s stint, Japan suffered 3 typhoons: 1 the day they arrived, 1 in the middle of their trip, and 1 the day they we left. The last one was the biggest typhoon to hit Japan in 10 years. Most of the transportation to the airport was shut down. No one knew which lines were still running. Cliff recalls, “it was a crazy morning, we weren't sure we would make it back to America. We made it to our plane at the very last second."
Cliff and Sasha is a democratic collaborative with arrangements compiled to fit the strengths of the musicians at hand. Both units have distinct solo recordings and projects, but Sasha finds it refreshing to write music for an entire unit, rather than a soloist. “I approach songwriting from a much more orchestrated point of view and pay closer attention to detail, from bass lines to synthesizer sounds to vocal melodies and harmonies...all the band members are such brilliant musicians, it's easy to come into a rehearsal with a song idea or sketch and have each member put their own spin on it to create something truly remarkable.”

Cliff Hines Band performs in Austin, Texas tomorrow night! An incredible young jazz/rock fusion band from New Orleans led by prodigy guitarist Cliff Hines (The Mike Dillon Band) is on a west coast tour promoting their new album, Wanderlust, and will be in town Wednesday, June 19. The mid-week b.y.o.b. party at the Carousel Lounge begins at 9 pm, with free flowing hip hop rhymesayer MC Sweet Tea (a.k.a. New Orleans native Tiana Huxley), and electroacoustic weirdcore pop artist B-Knox. No cover, 21+.
