Fear vs. Hate

December prompt challenge day 16: Holiday movies
~
Matt wakes up to an elbow in his ribs.
“You,” Kris says, poking him in the tummy, “suck.”
“I don’t!” He blinks awake. “It’s the part where, um. Where Gonzo’s being annoying, right?”
Kris groans and flops back onto the couch. “First of all, Gonzo is a national treasure and you’re the one who’s annoying. Second, wrong. It’s the creepy baby ghost.”
Matt wrinkles his nose. “I hate the creepy baby ghost.”
“You do not,” Kris says, and before he knows it, she’s hauling him into her lap with her arms around his waist. “Plus,” she leans in and kisses his neck, “this way I can keep you all safe in my arms.”
Matt shivers, but settles himself back against Kris’ shoulder. “I said I hate it,” he mutters, because he’d like to keep a little dignity, “not that I’m scared of it.”
“You say you hate things when they scare you, and that’s okay.” She pulls his legs across her lap. “Remember when we watched Troll 2 and you cried but said you were laughing at how much you hated it?”
“That movie is objectively terrible and I hate it!”
Kris giggles, and Matt loves it. “Sure. That’s what it is.”
