I would argue that the KRYPTON TV Show gave us the best versions of these DC villains!
Brainiac, General Zod, Doomsday
Two, count ’em, TWO Regé-Jean Page headlines today. This pretty man is taking over! First up is more details about his Bridgerton departure. The Hollywood Reporter claims that Regé-Jean was offered 3 to 5 episodes as a guest star in the second season, and they would’ve paid him $50,000 an episode. But, still, he declined.
Headline #2 has to do with the DC Universe. Yesterday The Hollywood Reporter published a Ray Fisher interview that detailed all the asshole Joss Whedon/racist fuckery on the set of The Justice League. It included multiple allegations of racism against DC co-chairman Geoffrey Johns, including the fact that he didn’t want Regé-Jean to play the lead role of Superman’s grandfather on SyFy’s Krypton TV series because of his race. He didn’t think Superman’s gramps should be Black. Geoff’s rep defended him to THR, saying “he believed fans expected the character to look like a young Henry Cavill.” So they went with Cameron Cuffe, a white actor.
This is how Ray responded to Geoffrey John’s defense on Twitter:
OK, so apparently Michael Shannon played General Zod in the movie Man of Steel. But on the TV show Krypton, the actors who played General Zod’s ancestors were Black. So, by that logic, Ray is saying that Geoff’s excuse is bullshit. A bunch of the comments on Ray’s tweet include nerd-facts like, “Kryptonians are birthed in birthing pods!” and how Superman Kal-El and grandpa Seg-El were born centuries apart. So, yeah, many agree that Seg-El could have been played by a Black actor.
Regé-Jean also had something to say about this on Twitter:
Black Krypton writer Nadria Tucker responded to Ray’s tweet, implying that the only reason Geoff was OK with the Zods being Black was cuz General Zod was a villain:
Nadria’s experience with Geoff Johns (whose rep asked that he be described as “Lebanese-American” in the article) was also included in yesterday’s THR article. She accused Geoff of rejecting her advice about a Black character’s changing hairstyles:
“I said Black women, we tend to change our hair frequently. It’s not weird, it’s a Black thing,” she says”And he said, ‘No, it’s not.’”
Johns’ spokesperson says: “What were standard continuity notes for a scene are being spun in a way that are not only personally offensive to Geoff, but to the people that know who he is, know the work he’s done and know the life he lives, as Geoff has personally seen firsthand the painful effects of racial stereotypes concerning hair and other cultural stereotypes, having been married to a Black woman who he was with for a decade and with his second wife, who is Asian American, as well as his son who is mixed race.”
Jesus Christ. So Geoff’s personally offended? I’m gonna go ahead and say Regé-Jean dodged a racist bullet by not getting cast in Krypton (which was canceled after two seasons). And even though I know nothing about the actor who ultimately won the role, he’s probably not in the running to be the next Bond. Big mistake, DC! Big! HUGE!
During Comic-Con International in San Diego, it was announced that the DC Comics character Lobo will be joining Krypton in Season 2.
By Rao THAT KRYPTON FINALE
the last ten minutes were off the hook and now I need Season 2 immediately? Also Zod is the worst jfc
If you don’t watch this already, I’d now say it is totally worth it.
David S. Goyer and Geoff Johns suggested that the Green Lantern Corps and Omega Men could appear on Syfy's Krypton 'eventually.'
The Phantom Zone enabling cameoes from across time and space, eh? Well, I’d like the LEGION to show up (different from the Legion of Superheroes, they’re space cops, like the Green Lanterns or Nova Corps over at Marvel), the New Gods (natch), and the Starmen.
Particularly since two of them (Jack Knight and Mikaal Tomas) have actually met Clark’s bio-dad during the 1990s Starman run, due to time travel. They implictly gave teenage Jor-El the idea of sending Clark to Earth in the first place.
I miss my princess 😓
With more superhero television shows than ever before on the small screen, CBR lists 7 that need to end and 8 that should keep growing.
