In the homebrew campaign I am DMing (our original DM wanted to take a break), I decided to freak out my friends by cursing K’ter to be a cat. Again.
Their goal is to discover how to end the curse (which is killing him btw), figure out the mystery behind the strange town they are in, and why K’ter was cursed in the first place. I also added a twist: if K’ter dies in this campaign, then I am going to create a whole new character to play next session. This has the effect of making everyone really tense and freak out extremely whenever he’s in danger or villains show up. It’s great to watch their reactions and it warms my heart to learn just how much they actually love my character.
And all this bullshit happened with a curse that seemed simple, but is actually way more wicked and horrible than they originally thought. I love being DM.
