This is my favorite song in the world. The lyrics are very close to my heart. Listening to this song, it reminds me who I am as an Indian woman and what it is that I have to fight against. But listening to it also lets me know that times are changing and that people are starting to question those old traditions and beliefs about girls. From the first time I heard it, Gurdas Maan's lyrics spoke to me at my core. Every time I listen to this song, I understand a little more than I did, because the lyrics are just so layered. The line that first stood out to me was "tu jami ta maape kehende pariyee ain dhiye. Saurey ghar which kahend begani jahi eh dhiye." which is an old Indian saying that a girl is only a guest in her parents home and that her real home is with her in-laws. But the in-laws always say that their new daughter in law is someone else's. So far ages, Indian woman have been stuck in a sort of no place as to what they can consider their home. I'd heard that phrased so many times before, but it wasn't until I was in high school that I understood the significance of that saying. This song was instrumental in helping me comprehend what it is that have to do to make something of my life.
