@kurifu yes! you really should.. hmm i think you meant “given up hope of the FF games being sci fi” ;) 

but if you’re a fan of Final Fantasy, FF IX is a must play. it’s a homage to the creative fantasy elements of Final Fantasy. it's incredibly well done. it’s actually available on Steam! and if you start playing, tell me.. cause even though i have finished this game like around 10 years ago, i still remember alot of the places and what goes on. it’s that memorable. i’m actually considering to play it again cause it’s fantastic and i want to relieve the nostalgia and how epic the game is. the story from beginning to end, it’s just beautiful to experience all of that.

What new techniques did you use?

Using harder-edged brushes and settings to try to render texture better (like on his hat and hair) and using more mixing of cel shading and soft shading. I’ve done some of this before but not to the extent that I did for this one. :>
