Kurobe gorge is a beautiful, wild place. Monkeys live here and they have their own bridges, impossible for humans to use. I didn’t see any, but in compensation there was a beautiful sunset in Toyama.

saying goodbye to kurobe gorge, japan! my thoughts on visiting here + some travel info are under the cut ^^

it was super pretty! the sightseeing train was so fun and the views were stunning. it’s probably a good choice for those who don’t want to or can’t walk long distances, since you can enjoy the gorge from the sightseeing train. while there are some hiking paths available at the terminal stop, unfortunately they may be closed for maintenance (most of the paths were closed when i came) and when i was there, there wasn’t any advance notice on their website. so people who really want to hike here might want to call to ask about the condition of the hiking trails before making the trip up here. 

how to get there: i came in from kanazawa, from where you can take a bullet train to kurobe-unazukionsen station (35min). from there, it’s a very short walk to shin-kurobe station, and you can take a normal or express train to unazuki-onsen station (20 to 30 minutes). from there, it’s a short walk to unazaki station, the departing station for the sightseeing train into the gorge. while the sightseeing train has a few stops, most passengers seem to stay all the way until the end at keyakidaira station (1.5 hrs), before getting off to walk around. the whole one-way trip takes about three hours including transfer times. 

cost: the bullet train is 3500 yen/one-way (unreserved seats). shin-kurobe to unazuki-onsen is normally 630/740 yen/one-way, depending on whether you’re taking the normal or express train; i bought a round-trip ticket at shin-kurobe for 1100 yen. the sightseeing train is 1980 yen/one-way. the sightseeing train also has a few different cars: the open-air cars are the cheapest, while enclosed cars are more expensive. the open-air cars are great for photos, but it’s definitely noisier (the train moving along the tracks is very loud) and i think you feel the changes in temperature much more (the train goes through several tunnels that feel much cooler than the outside temperature). 

other bits: 

i would definitely advise bringing a light jacket for the tunnels: i came on a warm day (26C/79F), but inside the tunnels it felt at least 10C cooler! 

come earlier in the day if possible: we came in around late morning and by the time we left by early afternoon, the train heading into the gorge was packed. the train has a strict limit on the number of passengers in each car, so if it’s full by the time you arrive you’ll have to wait for the next one (and they’re not super frequent).

i came in spring, but i’ve heard that it’s very busy in the fall (i can imagine it’d be gorgeous!), so if you’re going during that season you may want to reserve tickets in advance.
